New York's independent boutiques, sorted by what they actually buy

Kirna Zabête's own stores page lists 160 Mercer Street, and most of the guides ranking New York boutiques this month still send you to 477 Broome. Dover Street Market spent the summer gutted, the way it spends every summer, and reopened at one in the afternoon on Friday, August 7.

Two addresses, two lists wrong, and that is only where the checking started. What follows sorts the city by what each shop actually buys rather than by which train gets you closest, and says plainly which of these is a national chain with a New York branch and which is one room with one buyer. Big house luxury, bought at national scale

Kirna Zabête sells Alaïa, Bottega Veneta, Khaite, Loewe and Saint Laurent to people who walked in having already decided. Beth Buccini was a New York Magazine fashion editor before she was a merchant; she opened the shop at 96 Greene Street in 1999, moved it to 477 Broome in 2013, has been sole owner since 2015, and now holds 160 Mercer. Tier, honestly stated: seven stores, with rooms in East Hampton, Palm Beach, Bryn Mawr, Nashville and Miami, and a buy that runs to big house luxury far more than to discovery.

The Webster takes the landmarked cast iron building at 29 Greene Street, where Laure Hériard Dubreuil put the New York arm of a company she started in Miami. Chanel, Miu Miu, Alaïa, Rick Owens and Maison Margiela hang under one roof, eleven to seven Monday through Saturday, noon to six Sunday. The chain has spread across the country since, Bal Harbour to Costa Mesa to Las Vegas, so read Greene Street as the New York outpost of an operation rather than as a one off.

The avant garde survived, in three unlike rooms

Dover Street Market New York takes eight levels at 160 Lexington Avenue, basement to seventh floor, with Rose Bakery inside on its own phone line. Comme des Garçons has run it since 2013, so it is a house concept store rather than an independent, and still the standard every multi brand buyer here gets measured against. It pulls the entire market down each summer and installs it again; this season the contact page read currently closed, reopens Friday, August 7th at 1:00pm. Every floor you walk this fall is three weeks old.

IF Boutique has been selling in SoHo since 1978, from the cast iron corner at 94 Grand Street since the 1990s, which still leaves it older than most of the shopping district around it. Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto, Dries Van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester sit inside a roster past fifty labels. Eleven to seven Monday through Saturday, noon to 6:30 Sunday, (212) 334-4964, all sale items final. (If you need to be greeted, this is not your shop.)

Hotoveli left the West Village for Unit 120 at 101 North 3rd Street in Williamsburg and went appointment first: weekdays by appointment only, confirmed by email two hours ahead, Sunday walk in from noon to six. It still answers a Manhattan 212 number. Guidi, Sacai, Undercover and Yohji Yamamoto run alongside roughly forty more labels, which is a collector's list, and Sunday is the only casual way in.

South of Delancey, which is where discovery went

Colbo opened at 51 Orchard Street in 2021 and reads as a clubhouse that sells clothes: Yoko Sakamoto, Camiel Fortgens, O by Jan-Jan Van Essche and SK Manor Hill beside its own line, plus a bar pouring Maru coffee, records, rotating vintage, and weekends given over to DJs, cooks and designer pop ups. The fashion tier is Japanese and Northern European, deliberately soft spoken. Nobody here is chasing a house logo.

Café Forgot runs like a group show. Vita Haas and Lucy Weisner started it in 2017 as a nomadic pop up and landed permanently at 29 Ludlow Street in 2021, an address its own site still styles as Nº 29; the roster of small labels, Gabe Gordon, Martine Ali and Colin Locascio among them, turns over the way exhibitions do. Three figure prices, one off runs, discovery rather than the wardrobe you keep for a decade.

Madison, once you subtract the flagships

Uptown is a mono brand corridor, which makes Kirna Zabête's room at 943 Madison Avenue close to the last serious multi brand door on the avenue. It keeps uptown hours, ten to six against eleven to seven in SoHo, and sits a few steps from the Breuer building at 945.

One room, one buyer

C'H'C'M' is a single room of menswear at 2 Bond Street, where Sweetu Patel sells Margaret Howell, Auralee, Evan Kinori, Arpenteur, Hender Scheme and Ludwig Reiter alongside his own house line. The house pieces hang unmarked beside the imports, which is either the point or an inconvenience, depending on you.

How to walk it

Greene, Mercer and Grand sit within a few blocks of each other, so SoHo is one afternoon and Madison another, given the ten to six clock uptown. The Lower East Side runs Orchard to Ludlow, an easy hour on foot. Lexington Avenue is its own trip; nobody has ever walked from Dover Street Market to Grand Street in a good mood. During fashion week, September 10 through 15, store events land across SoHo and the Lower East Side and the sidewalk at Varick and Beach turns into a scrum, which is dressed for differently than a normal Tuesday.

Before you hand over a card: ask what is final sale, because at IF all of it is. Confirm a Hotoveli weekday by email two hours ahead or you will stand on North 3rd Street holding coffee. September is still summer here, low to mid eighties with humidity, so the wool you fell for gets bought in October, when the coats finally walk. The city by city sort covers the rest.
