What to wear to NYFW, invited or not

The official New York Fashion Week calendar runs Thursday September 10 to Tuesday September 15, and about seventy shows and presentations sit on the CFDA's preliminary schedule for the spring 2027 season. Henry Zankov opens it on the tenth with his first collection as artistic director of Diane von Furstenberg. Thom Browne closes it on the fifteenth. Ralph Lauren, Coach and Rachel Comey go the night before, on the ninth.

None of that is for sale. No public ticket exists for a show on the CFDA calendar at any price; the seats go to press, buyers and clients. Worth saying flatly, because most of the pages that rank for getting into fashion week were written by the people selling the alternative.

What $125 at Gotham Hall buys

The Bureau Fashion Week runs September 11 to 13 at Gotham Hall with tickets from $125, and Runway 7 sells general admission through VIP at Sony Hall. Both are real productions, and both are a different animal from the official calendar: on the pay to walk circuit, designers buy the runway and guests buy the seat (not a scandal, just a different business). Go for the spectacle. Do not arrive believing the ticket put you on the CFDA schedule.

The free show is the sidewalk, and it is the better one. Outside Spring Studios, the corner of Varick and Beach is the week's anchor scrum, with smaller crowds outside Gotham Hall on Broadway, on the plaza at The Shed in Hudson Yards, and around the Chelsea venues. Nobody checks a list on a public sidewalk.

If you have a seat

Dress for the room, then for the twenty minutes on the pavement before it. September here opens as leftover summer, with highs in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit and real humidity straight through the week. Silk sticks. A wool suit that photographs beautifully at noon is a punishment by four.

One strong silhouette in a fabric that takes heat, then, and nothing layered for insurance: a funnel neck jacket over a slip, a suit skirt with a fine knit, satin cut loose rather than close. This is also the first September the CFDA's fur free policy applies to every brand on the official schedule, so the faux coat in the second row is now the only coat in the room. Kirna Zabête carries the big house version of that at 160 Mercer Street, an address most guides have not caught up to, with Alaïa, Khaite and Proenza Schouler on the floor; at seven stores from SoHo to Nashville, the buy runs big house rather than discovery. The Webster works the same tier at 29 Greene Street, inside a landmarked cast iron building, 11 to 7 through the week. It is the New York door of a national chain, not a one off. If you have a sidewalk

Street style is a competitive sport played in 80 degree humidity, and it rewards two things: colour and silhouette, both legible from across Varick Street. A camera at thirty feet reads a shape and a shade, then moves on.

Leopard is doing neutral duty this season, on Marni's coat, in Carolina Herrera's black and white, on the skinny scarves at Zadig+Voltaire, so a leopard piece now behaves like navy. Chocolate suede is the other material story of fall 2026: loafers, the knee high boots that walked nearly every autumn runway, the slouchy espresso shoulder bag. Vintage wins on this corner, because a photographer has seen the new thing forty times by Saturday. Desert Vintage keeps its New York room at 34 Orchard Street open daily 11 to 7 while the Tucson archive that feeds it has gone appointment only. Stock is one off by definition; go for the find, not a size run.

If you are going to the party after

The open door layer is the pop ups, store events and parties across SoHo and the Lower East Side, the part of fashion week a New Yorker walks into on a Tuesday. Dress louder than you would for a show. 2026 has gone maximalist, with volume, heavy jewellery and block colour where the last few Septembers ran beige.

Café Forgot at 29 Ludlow Street is the room to shop for it: Vita Haas and Lucy Weisner have run it since 2017 as a group show more than a store, three figure prices, one off runs. Colbo at 51 Orchard Street keeps a tea bar, a record rack and weekend programming of DJs and chefs, which makes it the rare shop where the event and the stock are the same evening. Dover Street Market New York at 160 Lexington Avenue earns the trip this month specifically: it tears the whole eight level building down every summer, and this year's rebuild reopened on August 7, so every floor is three weeks old.

The calendar is invitation only, the sidewalk is not, and the sidewalk is where the photographs come from.

When to go and what to check

Shop before the week, not during it. The first weekend of September is when the racks are full and the rooms are empty; by the tenth the good stock is on hold for stylists. Start in Tribeca. Patron of the New sits on cobbled Franklin Street, open Monday to Saturday 12 to 7 and Sunday 12 to 6, with Acne Studios and Loewe beside Salomon trail shoes, a mix that reads stylist showroom more than argument. Walk north into SoHo, where IF Boutique at 94 Grand Street opens 11 to 7 Monday to Saturday and 12 to 6:30 on Sunday and carries Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto and Ann Demeulemeester with no theatre whatsoever. For the quieter menswear answer, C'H'C'M' at 2 Bond Street stocks Margaret Howell, Auralee and Evan Kinori beside an in house line made across five countries.

Three things to check before you pay. IF marks every sale item final, which is a real risk on a shoe you have worn around the shop for four minutes. Kirna Zabête keeps uptown hours at 943 Madison Avenue, 10 to 6, against 11 to 7 in SoHo, so the two doors are not interchangeable on a tight afternoon.
