The store first

Dries Van Noten runs its own shop at 168 Mercer Street in SoHo, open Monday to Saturday 11am to 7pm and Sunday noon to 6pm. It is one of eleven the house owns, alongside Antwerp, Paris, Milan, London, Los Angeles and Tokyo.

Dries Van Noten showed his first menswear collection in 1986 and opened Het Modepaleis in Antwerp in 1989. The house publishes its prices: a loose cotton shirt is EUR 395 and a double layer cotton shirt is EUR 795.

The five shops, in order of depth

La Garconne carries 63 of the 79. Its Tribeca store at 465 Greenwich Street opens Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 7pm and Sunday noon to 6pm, and it has traded since 2005. The menswear is at 504 Greenwich Street on the same hours.

Tokio 7 is the cheap end. Eight pieces at $90 to $860, median $248, at 83 E 7th Street in the East Village.

Pilgrim New York held five, $140 to $260, median $220. It is at 70 Orchard Street on the Lower East Side, closed Mondays and open noon to 5pm the rest of the week.

The two nobody lists

INA held two pieces at $425 and $1,045. Ancien held one at $495. Neither shows up on any Dries Van Noten stockist page, because neither is a stockist: both buy second hand.

Roden Gray in Vancouver held 71. Toronto spreads it across six shops: 119 Corbo with 41, VSP Consignment with 40, then AREA+001, Mine and Yours, Rewind Couture and Fashionably Yours.

The prints are the reason to buy it and the reason to check the piece. Ask for a photograph of the actual garment laid flat, because print placement moves between sizes.

Dries Van Noten sizing is Belgian and runs close through the chest. A 48 is not a medium in every jacket, so ask for the pit to pit measurement.
