Essentials hoodie sizing: they're cut big, not running big

Essentials hoodies are cut big on purpose, and none of Fear of God's 122 hoodie pages tells you to size down. On 25 September the brand put 16 NFL 90s Relaxed Hoodies on its site at US$215 each. A day later someone on X asked what the brand had been cooking, sure the hoodie would pass for team merch and annoyed that even the font had changed.

If that NFL hoodie is in your cart, it is the boxy cut, and it needs the most care with sizing. Choose the cut first, the Classic, the 90s Relaxed or the women's cropped Classic, then take the size its chart gives against a hoodie you already own. Sizing down by reflex fights a relaxed cut the brand wrote into the name.

The brand's own pages, read 27 September 2026, explain why the chart is the whole answer. Of the 122 hoodie descriptions, 50 name a dropped shoulder, and not one says true to size, size up or size down.

Its FAQ puts Essentials first on the list of products that "cannot be returned or exchanged". Outside the EU and UK, a wrong size stays yours.

The Classic, for the hoodie most people mean

Start here. Fear of God builds it from "380GSM core fleece, delivering an ideal balance of comfort and structure", with a soft touch logo across the back. The Essentials FW26 Classic Hoodie went up on 9 September 2026 at US$160, the same price in every size from XS to 4XL.

Its chart, headed CLASSIC HOODIE, runs from 25 1/2 inches long at XXS to 28 1/2 at XXL, measured from the high point of the shoulder. At M that is 27 inches of body and a 23 inch sleeve. (If you wear 3XL or 4XL, the chart stops at XXL, so there is no row to check yours against.)

In spring it was the SS26 Classic Hoodie, US$150 from 14 April 2026, "made from heavy 380gsm core fleece" with labels at the hood and cuff. Same fleece, different season.

The 90s Relaxed against the Classic, for the boxy fit

The NFL hoodies open the same chart as the Embossed FW26 90s Relaxed Hoodie, which has been US$185 in XS to 4XL since 16 September 2026. It is "crafted from 480GSM fleece" with "relaxed proportions and dropped shoulders", an embossed 3D logo on the front, a double layer hood and side pockets. Each NFL version, the Giants and the Packers among them, adds "paneled raglan sleeves" and "a relaxed fit and boxy silhouette".

Against the Classic, the 90s Relaxed body runs half an inch longer at every size. The bigger gap is the sleeve. At M it runs 24 3/4 inches against 23, a full 1 3/4 inches more.

A 90s Relaxed S is 27 inches long with a 24 1/2 inch sleeve, the length of a Classic M with a longer arm.

So sizing down in this cut buys back the Classic's length and keeps the long sleeve. Do that for the shape, never by reflex. The heaviest is the Campus 90s Hoodie, US$175 since 11 February 2026, in "520GSM heavy fleece", pigment dyed and cut "cropped, relaxed" with dropped shoulders.

The women's Classic, for a cropped fit

Shorter by 4 inches at every size, the Womens Essentials FW26 Classic Hoodie is cropped by design, 23 inches long at M against the Classic's 27. Fear of God says it is designed with "a feminine cropped silhouette while maintaining the signature Fear of God relaxed proportions". It shares the Classic's launch day, 9 September 2026, along with its 380GSM core fleece and its US$160 price, and sells in XS to XL.

Of the adult charts, this is the only one that says how its chest is measured: flat, one inch below the armhole, 23 inches at M. A size up adds length. It adds chest and sleeve with it.

If the longer body is what you want, the Classic is the cut for it.

Fear of God wrote the fit into the names, and the chart prints it in inches.

Old seasons and kids' sizes, for resale

Hypebeast's Jake Silbert reported on 18 April 2018 that Fear of God's Essentials line had arrived in March 2018 with relaxed hoodies, priced below the mainline. Jerry Lorenzo, its designer, said in the same report that he wanted "an honest collection that addressed essentials needs in your wardrobe at an accessible price". He described shapes "that work together like legos or tetris".

The Fear of God Essentials hoodies on the shelf number 44, from SS19 to FW25, and 7 of them are kids' pieces. Watch the letter S. On the brand's kids' chart an S is a 6/7, 19 1/2 inches long against 26 1/2 for an adult Classic S.

The SS22 Kids "1977" Hoodie in Light Oatmeal, $250 CAD, and the SS23 Kids Cable Knit Hoodie in Black, $300, are both listed in S. Read the title before the size.

For older pieces, like the pre owned SS19 Logo Hoodie in Blue, ask the seller for body length and sleeve, since the charts above come from today's pages. The dearest is the FW20 Knit Hoodie in Buttercream, $500 in XXS. At the other end, the newest season is also the cheapest, a pre owned FW25 Classic Fit Fleece Hoodie in Black at $120 in XXL.

How to measure a hoodie you already own

Lay a hoodie that fits the way you like flat on a table. Measure the body from the high point of the shoulder down to the hem, then the sleeve from the shoulder to the end of the cuff. Then find the size on your cut's chart whose length and sleeve come closest to those numbers.

These are garment measurements, not body sizes, and each chart says so at the top: "To help you determine the best size for you, see the product measurements." Leave the chest for last, since the Classic chart never says if its chest is measured flat or around.

New on fearofgod.com, Essentials is final sale unless you live in the EU or UK, where the FAQ gives 14 days to withdraw. On resale, Utopia at 132 Cumberland Street in Yorkville, Toronto, ships abroad from Canada, and duties on international orders are the buyer's. Its refund page says "All sales are final", and the shop asks buyers to confirm size and colour before checkout.

Check the grade on a resale title too: 41 of the 44 Essentials hoodies there carry none, which means ungraded, not new. Do Essentials hoodies run big?

They are cut big by design, and the brand's charts show by how much. At M the 90s Relaxed carries a 24 3/4 inch sleeve against the Classic's 23.

Should I size down in Essentials hoodie?

Only when the chart puts a smaller size closer to a hoodie you already own. None of the 122 hoodie pages advises it, and outside the EU and UK the brand sells Essentials as final sale.

What size Essentials hoodie should I get?

The size whose length and sleeve come closest to a hoodie you like, in the cut you chose. At M the Classic is 27 inches long, the 90s Relaxed 27 1/2 and the women's Classic 23. On within, read the title too, because 4 of the 14 listings in S are kids' pieces.
