How to spot fake Goyard: check it against Goyard itself

To spot fake Goyard, start with Goyard's own page, where a Saint Louis PM weighs 300 g and is made in France, then check the seller and the price.

To spot fake Goyard, check it against Goyard, which has kept an index card for every order since the 19th century. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor opened theirs in 1939, and it closed only when the Duchess died in 1986. Karl Lagerfeld opened his in 1972; it closed in 2019.

IN STOCK NOW

Goyard, on the shelf.

A Saint Louis tote in a resale listing, or on a friend's shoulder, arrives with none of that paper. No Goyard page offers to check one for you. So the photos go to a legit check thread, where regulars study strangers' bags for free, which is a kindness.

Our view: check a Goyard against Goyard, not against a stranger's photo of another bag. Goyard's Canadian site, read on 4 October 2026, prints each model's size, weight, materials, lining and where it is made. A good fake can copy numbers, so a match proves little, a mismatch is a question, and the seller and the price come next.

The tote, where a faded corner is expected

Edmond Goyard created the Goyardine canvas in 1892 and signed it, the first Parisian trunk maker to do so. Its dots recall the log drives of his ancestors from Clamecy in Burgundy. Production stopped after the Second World War and came back in 1998, under Jean-Michel Signoles.

The exact printing "remains strictly confidential", but Goyard names the steps: a ground colour on bare linen and cotton, then three screen printed layers of colour. That canvas went on the Saint Louis, first designed as a reversible beach bag and named for King Louis IX. Today, CAD 3,300 buys a black Saint Louis Tote PM second hand, which is a lot of beach bag.

Goyard's care page says the chevron can fade at corners, folds and bottoms with use, and calls that patina a sign of natural materials. So read faded corners against the grade. The grades say lightly pre owned for a grey Belvedere PM at CAD 4,300 and lightly used for a brown Cap Vert crossbody at CAD 3,000.

The card holder, one model at two prices

François Goyard joined the business in 1845 as a 17 year old apprentice. When his employer, Louis-Henri Morel, died suddenly in 1852, he took over and renamed it Maison Goyard, by Goyard's history page.

Goyard calls the Saint Sulpice "the Maison's most compact model", in Goyardine with Vauzelles calfskin and a yellow Nièvre goatskin lining. On leather, its care page expects veins, wrinkles and folds: "They are proof that your Goyard product is unique and authentic." (If a listing shows only the outside, ask for a photo of the lining; Goyard prints its colour.)

The same model asks CAD 450 in black and natural on resale, the lowest of the 46, and CAD 800 in black and tan. Colour and condition move a price, so a price alone settles nothing.

The toiletry bag, and the labels of 1891

Edmond Goyard took charge on 1 April 1885 and opened trade offices in New York and on London's Mount Street, where the Mayfair boutique is today. A letterhead of 24 June 1891 bears the British Royal Family's arms, the Russian Imperial family's and the Great Seal of the United States. The trunk labels still carry them.

Every Goyard trunk is made by hand in the workshops in Carcassonne, numbered, and marked with the initials of the person who made it. The Jouvence MM toiletry bag is shaped to keep bottles upright, which anyone who has unpacked a leaked shampoo will appreciate.

In navy blue, the Jouvence MM is listed at CAD 2,500; a GM in black and brown sits at CAD 2,600. Prices that close make it easy to compare the wrong size. Check the size first.

The painted one is a hand's work

Painted stripes and initials go back to the Compagnons de Rivière, log drivers who marked their logs to tell owners apart, by Goyard's marquage page. François Goyard brought the habit to trunk making in 1853, by the same page.

Marquages are "executed entirely by hand by skilled painters", and the boutique teams guide each design. By Goyard's terms, a personalised piece cannot be returned unless it arrives faulty or damaged. Paint is a commitment.

Colour came later. In 1998 Signoles added eleven colours beside the historic black. Sky blue is one, and a lightly pre owned Boeing 25 toilet bag in that colour asks CAD 2,000.

A resale bag arrives without its index card. The seller has to stand in for it.

Four checks before you pay

First, the page. Find the model on Goyard's own site and compare size, weight, lining, materials and where it was made. Sizes run PM, MM and GM, so a mismatch is a question, and a match is not a verdict.

Second, the seller. You want an address, a phone number, an authenticity promise in writing and a name that stands behind the piece if it is wrong. For a new bag that name is Goyard, whose store page lists no seller but its own boutiques and counters.

Third, the price, in its own currency. Of the 46 pieces, the 8 bags ask CAD 2,000 to 7,500, median CAD 2,300, topped by a black Alpin MM backpack, worn once. What Goyard asks on the resale market has the rest.

Fourth, the payment. The Canadian Anti Fraud Centre's page "Check twice, pay once" flags greatly reduced prices, such as 80% off. It says to verify the seller's address, phone number and email, and to pay by credit card or in person.

Goyard's own site against a resale shop

Every resale ask above is at Utopia, a resale shop at 132 Cumberland Street in Toronto, not a Goyard boutique. Its refund page calls everything sold there 100% authentic, the shop's own promise, and every sale final. Its pre owned Goyard is photographed to show every flaw, it says, and ships abroad in 7 to 10 business days with tracking.

Online, Goyard allows 30 days to return anything not personalised. That is 30 days to change your mind against a final sale with photos. Weigh the two.

Common questions

Can you buy Goyard online?

Yes, from Goyard itself, on its Canadian site. On 4 October 2026 it showed the Saint Louis PM, Saint Sulpice card wallet and Jouvence MM in stock, with 30 days to return anything not personalised. For pieces sold second hand, see where to buy Goyard.

What cities have Goyard stores?

Paris, London, New York, Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Bal Harbour in Miami, Dallas, Chicago, Tokyo and Taipei, by Goyard's own pages. The Paris flagship has had the address 233 rue Saint-Honoré since 1856, and New York's is at 699 Madison Avenue. The Canadian site lists none in Canada.

How to tell if Goyard is real?

Check it against Goyard's own page for that model, then check the seller and the price. A match on size, weight and lining proves little, so a seller you can reach and a price in line with real asks carry the rest.

Every business above is independent, was verified open as of August 2026, and nobody paid to be here. If one has closed or moved, tell us at hello@shopwithin.co and we will fix it.
