How to spot fake Moncler: the code, the year, the seller
How to spot fake Moncler: what the code tag proves, which years carry which tag, and what a real resale piece costs in Canadian dollars.
Every Moncler product has carried a code tag since spring 2016, and that code is the best evidence a buyer will get. Most people asking whether a jacket is fake never use it.
The question is everywhere. On X in recent weeks, people called out fake Moncler on a bouncer, on a friend and in a reply thread, and nobody in those threads named a single check.
This note starts with the tag, because Moncler does. Then it covers the jackets made before the tag, the seller, and what a real piece costs on a resale shelf.
Quick facts
- Code tag on every product: since spring 2016, per WWD
- Moncler's own checker: code.moncler.com, launched in 2013
- Counterfeits seized in 2014: more than 450,000 items, across more than 1,450 cases
- Lyst Index, second quarter 2026: Moncler 16th of the 20 hottest brands
- A new Maya on moncler.com: $2,615 for men, read 11 September 2026
- On within: 13 Moncler pieces, $200 to $2,500, median $800, read 2 October 2026

Start with what Moncler itself says
Moncler's client service page has one entry for this question, called Product Code Verification, and it sends you to Code Moncler. That site says you need an account there to verify a code, even if you already have one at moncler.com.
We found no visual checklist of badges or stitching on Moncler's own pages, so this note does not print one as if it were Moncler's.
The most detailed outside guide is MonclerExpert, an independent site with no tie to the company. Its central rule is that the model name the checker returns must match the model tag sewn inside the jacket.
The tag since 2016
WWD reported the change in April 2016. From that spring, all Moncler products carry a tag in the shape of the logo, with RFID and NFC inside, an alphanumeric code and a QR code.
The tag is a radio chip, not a print. A counterfeiter can copy its look, but the code behind it belongs to one item in Moncler's own system, and that item has a model name.
MonclerExpert says most QR images on fakes are copied from a real tag, so a scan that lands on Moncler's site proves nothing.
"A hyperlink within a QR code is simple for anyone to create and is never proof of authenticity."
The bigger warning is about copied codes. MonclerExpert says many fakes carry a genuine code lifted from a real jacket, and a copied code can register as real at first. It reports that Moncler changed its checker in 2018 to flag codes checked more than a few times from different places.
Jackets made before 2016
According to MonclerExpert, all Moncler jackets made since 2009, and some since 2008, carry an authenticity tag with a code for that item alone.
A Certilogo tag ran from 2008 to 2012, a small QR tag from 2013 to 2015, and a large QR tag from 2015 or 2016 on. The RFID tag appeared on some shirts and light jackets in 2015, then on everything in 2016.
So a jacket's tag should match the year it was made. A 2012 jacket with a 2016 style tag is a question, and so is a 2018 jacket with no tag at all.
Moncler publishes no such timeline itself, so treat these dates as an outside reading and the code check as the evidence.
The seller and the price
Moncler's client service page says it runs over 300 boutiques, and it gives a North American number, 1 888 320 9162. A new jacket from Moncler or a boutique it names is the only new jacket with no question attached.
Everything else is resale. MonclerExpert reports that Moncler may decline to rule on a jacket bought on eBay, which it does not treat as an authorized seller.
The same holds for the shelf this note reads. Utopia, at 132 Cumberland Street, is a resale counter, not a Moncler retailer. Its own site says "All products sold are 100% authentic," and its refund policy says all sales are final, so do your checks before you pay.
Price is a signal, not proof, but it rules out a lot. On 11 September 2026 the Maya asked $2,615 for men on moncler.com in Canada. The cheapest new down jacket we verified, the Lans Packable Short, asked $1,825.
Both prices come from our Moncler price note, which found that anything under $1,300 new is a child's size or a resale price.
On the resale shelf on 2 October, the Maya Giubbotto in black asked $2,000 and the Montcla Short Down $2,500. A Deltour in cream, a Tibb Vest in navy and a Moncler x Off-White Dinard each asked $800, the median. A Logo Baseball Hat asked $200, the bottom of the shelf.
How to check a jacket in five minutes
First, find the code tag. On anything made from 2016, it should be there.
Second, enter the code at code.moncler.com on your own account. Do not trust a screenshot from the seller, and do not read a generic reply as a yes.
Third, compare the model name the checker shows with the model tag sewn inside. If they differ, stop.
Fourth, check the year against the tag type. Fifth, read the seller's written promise.
For a Maya, ask the seller for one clear photo of the code tag and the model tag in the same frame. A seller with a real jacket has no reason to refuse. (A blurry badge photo in a marketplace listing settles nothing, in either direction.)
Why the question keeps coming up
FashionNetwork's run of the Lyst Index for the second quarter of 2026 put Moncler 16th of the 20 hottest brands, just behind Celine.
Demand pulls fakes. In 2014 alone Moncler investigated more than 1,450 cases and seized more than 450,000 counterfeit items, WWD reported.
The label is older than its code. René Ramillon and André Vincent founded Moncler in 1952 in Monestier de Clermont, near Grenoble, and its first down jackets, in 1954, were for its own factory workers.
For a size, our Moncler sizing note has the chart, and Moncler vs Canada Goose helps if you are still choosing.
Common questions
How to spot fake Moncler?
Enter the code from its tag at code.moncler.com and check that the model name it returns matches the tag inside. Every Moncler product has carried a code tag since spring 2016.
Is my Moncler real?
It is most likely real if code.moncler.com returns a model name that matches the tag inside. For a jacket made before 2016, the tag type should also match its age.
How to spot a fake Moncler Maya?
Check the code tag at code.moncler.com and confirm the model name reads Maya. A new men's Maya asked $2,615 in Canada on 11 September 2026, so a new one at a few hundred dollars is not a sale.
