Why is Moncler so expensive? Yes, you pay for the patch

Moncler is so expensive because in 2025 only about 22 cents of each euro the group took in went to making the goods, and 31 went to selling them.

Moncler is expensive because in 2025 Moncler Group, Stone Island included, spent only about 22 cents of each euro making the goods. Selling took 31 cents and profit 29; the ads, the usual answer, took 7.

Moncler, Stone Island and The North Face, on the shelf.

On 20 September 2026 a post on X listed coat brands never to buy again, each with a verdict beside it. The North Face got "puro marketing", pure marketing. Canada Goose got "precio absurdo", absurd price, which we answer in why Canada Goose costs what it does.

Beside Moncler it wrote "pagas el parche", you pay for the patch, and the post drew 3,509 likes and 207 replies. The black Maya's page calls the patch pocket on its sleeve "a brand signature". The post was right.

Quick facts

  • Moncler Group, 2025: about 22 cents of each euro to making the goods, 31 to selling, 11 to running the company
  • Marketing against profit: 7 cents against 29
  • The black Maya: CAD 2,615 in Canada, USD 1,995 in the US
  • The luxury turn: 2003, under Remo Ruffini
  • On within: 13 Moncler pieces at one resale shop, CAD 200 to 2,500, median CAD 800, read 9 October 2026

For the cold, the down came first

The down is good, and the people who love it are right about that. Moncler is short for Monestier-de-Clermont, near Grenoble, where René Ramillon and André Vincent founded it in 1952 to make sleeping bags, capes and tents for mountain workers. The first down jackets followed in 1954, with a line named for the French climber Lionel Terray, and they dressed the Italian expedition to K2.

Moncler's own rule is at least 90% white goose down cluster with a fill power of 710 or more, and each batch is checked twice against 11 parameters. That came to 950 tests in 2025.

The black Maya is glossy nylon laqué, filled with 90% down and 10% feather, and made in Romania (it goes in the washing machine, 30°C at most). Good down, and the cheap part of the price.

For the name, the turn came in 2003

The name became the expensive part in 2003. Remo Ruffini took over that year and gave Moncler what its history page calls "a luxury positioning".

Before that, the jacket got lighter for ski racing in 1964, and Moncler dressed the French downhill team at the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics. The logo swapped Mont Aiguille for a cockerel that year, and by the 1980s the puffer had become a city jacket for the Paninari, a youth crowd.

Moncler listed in Milan on 16 December 2013, when its shares closed 47 percent above the offer price, and 2018 brought Moncler Genius and outside designers. That is the patch you pay for.

Making it against selling it

The first city boutique opened in Paris in 2007. By the end of 2025 Moncler ran 295 of its own stores, which with its website made 87% of Moncler brand sales.

Moncler Group, which has included Stone Island since 2021, spent EUR 956.0 million on selling in 2025 and about EUR 685.9 million making the goods it sold. Operating profit, EUR 913.4 million, was about four times the EUR 219.4 million spent on marketing.

In 2025 Moncler Group spent more on selling its goods than on making them.

The same Maya, Italy against Japan

Across five Moncler sites, the same black Maya costs least in Italy, most in Japan. At the Bank of Canada's rates for 9 October 2026, EUR 1,450 is about CAD 2,317 and JPY 326,700 about CAD 2,947. One jacket, about CAD 630 apart.

In between come Canada at CAD 2,615, the UK at about CAD 2,643 and the US at about CAD 2,847. Moncler's pages do not say which prices include tax, so read is luxury cheaper abroad before you plan a trip around the Italian one.

For the second owner, pre owned Moncler

Utopia, a resale shop at 132 Cumberland Street in Yorkville, Toronto, has 13 Moncler pieces. Of those, 8 are pre owned Moncler with the shop's own grade, CAD 500 to 1,400. Its policy page says each comes with photos of its condition and any flaws.

A black Maya there is CAD 2,000 in size L, CAD 615 under Moncler's Canadian price. Same model, different jacket, no grade on its listing. A black Montcla, size M, tops the range at CAD 2,500.

Before you pay

Settle your size with Moncler sizing and match the product code with how to spot a fake Moncler before any money moves. Read the Moncler number as well as the letter: the resale shop's Maya lists a 4 and a 3 against one L, so ask the shop which it carries.

Moncler's Canadian site gives you 20 days to send a jacket back, free, by mail. At the resale shop every sale is final, so ask for every photo before you pay. Utopia ships from Toronto to the US and worldwide, 7 to 10 business days abroad, and a US buyer should check duty on clothes into the US first.

Buy Moncler for the down and the price looks steep; buy it for the name and you get what the sleeve says.
