How to spot fake Margiela Replica sneakers and GATs
How to spot fake Maison Margiela Replica sneakers: the line 22 tag, the insole print, the stitching, and what a real pair costs in Canadian dollars.
Maison Margiela sells its Replica sneaker for CAD$905 on its Canadian site. On 2 October 2026, five resale pairs asked $500 to $900 on one shelf.
The gap is small, so fakes of this shoe sell on looks, not on price. One forum thread this week was titled "Spotting fake GATs & replica sneakers on resale sites."

What the real shoe is
The brand says the Replica is inspired by Austrian sports shoes from the seventies, made in nappa leather and suede with a honey sole. Two of the five resale listings below call it the German Army Trainer, or GAT.
Start from the brand's own specification. The upper is 100% calf leather with suede trims, the lining is cotton and the sole is rubber, with a 3 cm heel.
It has white stitching at the back and a Replica label at the tongue, and it is made in Italy. A pair that departs from any of those details needs a closer look.
The numbered tag
Margiela introduced its numeric coding in 1997. Each item belongs to one of 13 lines, and the circled number on the tag identifies the line, the brand says.
Shoes are line 22, which the brand dates to 2005. Its first shoes appeared in 1989 as part of line 1, the women's collection.
So the heel tab of a real Replica carries a debossed 0 to 23 grid with 22 circled. LuxeDetect, an authentication guide, says the tab also reads Maison Margiela and Paris, and calls a blank tab a fake tell.
The name dates the pair. The house was Maison Martin Margiela until January 2015, LuxeDetect notes, so an older pair with the longer name is not suspect for that alone.
What authenticators check
Legit Check By Ch, an authentication app, calls the insole text the best single check. On real pairs the print is thicker and bolder, and on fakes it looks thin.
LuxeDetect adds that the real insole stamp is in gold foil. On fakes, it says, the insole shows only the size and MADE IN ITALY.
The stitching comes next. Legit Check By Ch says the side stitching on real pairs is finer and slightly longer, and the inscriptions on the sole are solid.
Then the tongue. The exterior print should have even density, and the text inside the tongue is boxier on real pairs, while fake lettering looks stretched.
Ask for the right photos
Legit Check By Ch advises asking for daylight photos with a timestamp, and walking away from sellers who rush you. Ask for the insole, the heel tab, both sides of the tongue, the side stitching and the sole.
Compare each photo with the brand's specification first, then with the tells above. No single detail proves a pair real, so judge them together.
What a real pair costs in Canada
On 2 October 2026 Utopia, on Cumberland Street in Toronto, held five Replica pairs. The top listing, a Replica German Army Trainer at $900 in size 9.5, carries the same style code as the brand's page.
A White Grey Gum pair asked $900 in size 8. A new GAT without its original box asked $750 in size 10.5.
A Light Blue pair asked $700 in size 8, and a pre owned White Painter in size 10 asked $500. The Margiela shelf lists them live.
The pattern is useful. The two pairs with no wear note sat within $5 of the brand's retail, and the discounts came with wear or a missing box.
A pair sold as new for far below that deserves the full check. For the split toe shoe, read our Tabi sizing note.
Common questions
How do you spot fake GATs and Replica sneakers on resale sites?
Check the heel tab for the 0 to 23 grid with 22 circled, then the insole print, which should be bold rather than thin. Compare the side stitching, the sole inscriptions and the tongue text before you pay.
Has there been a sharp increase in fakes on The RealReal?
A reader asked exactly that in the forums this week. Whatever the platform, run the same checks on the photos, and read our note on The RealReal's authentication before you buy there.
How much do Margiela Replica sneakers cost in Canada?
The brand lists the Replica at CAD$905. On 2 October 2026, five resale pairs asked $500 to $900, with the cheapest pre owned.
What number is circled on a Margiela sneaker tag?
