Palindrome trousers, the pair you buy for its inside

Palindrome trousers are Issey Miyake pants you can wear inside out, and one pair is left on within: size 1, $879. Issey Miyake showed the series at the Centre Pompidou on 3 October 2025, in a spring summer 2026 collection built on the question "What if garments are conscious?" Buy them for the inside.

Turned inside out, the lining shows as a pair of shorts over the trousers. Wear them that way as much as the right way round. Bought only as plain black wool trousers, they are a good pair at the wrong price.

The reason is one design choice. The lining was made in the form of shorts, so either side can be the outside. For a Friday dinner, turn them and tuck in a black T-shirt, so the shorts are the first thing anyone sees.

What the Palindrome is, a trouser with two outsides

"Being Garments, Being Sentient" was the spring summer 2026 collection, shown on Friday 3 October 2025. On the brand's page, PALINDROME sits under the heading "Merging Interior and Exterior", and the text says it allows "either side to be worn as the exterior".

On the jacket, what would be the lining is built in the form of a shirt, "subtly marked with small ISSEY MIYAKE logos". The pants get the same small logos. Theirs sit on a pair of shorts.

Inside out, the shorts go on top

PALINDROME launched on Sunday 1 February 2026. For all of February, SHIKAKU, the gallery on the second floor of the main building at ISSEY MIYAKE SHINJUKU, showed the garments beside a video.

Issey Miyake's announcement of 26 January 2026 said it plainly: "The pants lining is designed to look like shorts." The listing adds the result: "When worn inside out, it appears as though the shorts are layered on top."

For the full two piece, turn the jacket so its shirt shows and the pants so their shorts show. The brand's store article calls that pairing "a playful tailored ensemble".

The size goes by your body, and the pair left is a 1

Satoshi Kondo has directed the main line since the spring summer 2020 season, and the house says its research begins with developing yarn for its own fabrics.

On that chart, a size 1 means 156 to 160 cm tall, a 61 cm waist and an 87 cm hip. Size 2 is 161 to 165 cm with a 65 waist and 91 hip; size 3 is 166 to 170 with 69 and 95. The listing reads "1 is about an XS".

It is the only size in stock.

If you are not a 1, the house has other trousers with a trick

Since the first collection in 1971, the house has worked from "a piece of cloth" and ma, its word for the unfilled space between body and fabric. All three Issey Miyake trousers on the shelf are black, sizes 1 and 2 in stock between them, and the other two each have a trick of their own.

The LUSTROUS WOOL Wrap Pants have an asymmetric wrap panel you can drape over the shoulder like a salopette. They are lustrous gabardine woven from high twist wool and polyester, resin treated and hand washable, $1,580 in sizes 1 and 2. At $1,660 in size 2, the CALLIGRAPH Asymmetric Wool Pants are worsted wool with a finely pebbled texture, and "A single piece of fabric wraps around the body".

The pants against the jumpsuit

The Issey Miyake Palindrome Pants in black are $879 CAD, down from $1,580, which is 44 percent off, in size 1. The Issey Miyake Palindrome Jumpsuit in black is $1,649, down from $3,320, just over 50 percent off, with one left in size 2.

Under the shop's rule, anything 50 percent off or more is final sale. The jumpsuit is in. The pants are out.

On the brand's own UK and EU stores, the PALINDROME page shows 0 products today, and the US store has no page for it at all. You will find the pair at WDLT117, 7 St Thomas Street in Yorkville, Toronto, open 12:00 to 19:00 Monday to Saturday.

It ships abroad by Canada Post, UPS and DHL, free on regular and sale items over $400 to the US and over $800 everywhere else, clearance excluded.

Exchange or store credit is the only return, within 14 days of delivery, for pieces unworn, unwashed and with tags, and return shipping is not refunded. Anything in the shop's "Last Piece" promotion is final sale too, and the listing shows one pair left. Check your waist against 61 cm, then ask the shop before paying whether the pair counts as final sale.
