PLATE No. CCCLXXXVII

Punk fashion came out of one shop at 430 King's Road, London, which became Seditionaries in 1976. Vivienne Westwood told a journalist in 1977, "I intend the clothes I design to cause a confrontation," according to the London Museum. Many punks could not afford that shop, so buy the boots first, then a jacket, and use your own safety pins.

More Dr. Martens on within

The museum says some punks walked out without paying and others made their own clothes. Someone can fairly say punk should never be bought in a shop at all, and they have a point.

My answer is to spend money only on what you cannot make, which is boots and a leather jacket.

Quick facts

  • Where it started: 430 King's Road in Chelsea, London, run by Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren from 1971 to 1984.
  • The punk rename: Westwood and McLaren launched Seditionaries in 1976 with bondage wear, leather, chains, zips, tartan and ripped cloth.
  • On within: 159 items in the Punk and Rock edit and 20 pairs of Dr. Martens, read 8 November 2026.
  • The boots: Dr. Martens introduced the eight eyelet 1460 on 1 April 1960, and 20 pairs run CAD 200 to CAD 600.
  • The jacket: Irving Schott made the first zip front Perfecto in 1928, and black leather jackets here start at CAD 695.
  • Pins and tartan: the tartan shirt is CAD 325, the tartan jacket is CAD 355, and safety pin jewellery runs CAD 525 to CAD 2,000.

One shop on the King's Road

Vivienne Westwood had taught primary school before she and band manager Malcolm McLaren opened Let It Rock behind Paradise Garage at 430 King's Road in 1971. They sold 1950s records, took the whole shop, and switched in 1972 to zips, studs and leather as Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die. Huge pink padded plastic letters spelling SEX went up across the front in 1974, with rubber, PVC and fetish wear inside.

McLaren started managing the Sex Pistols in 1975 to spread word of the shop, where original bassist Glen Matlock worked. Westwood and McLaren renamed the address Seditionaries in 1976, filling it with bondage wear, chains, tartans and ripped, frayed fabrics.

"Many punks couldn't afford it," the London Museum says, so some walked out without paying and others made their own clothes. Their final shop, Worlds End, opened at 430 King's Road in 1980 and still stands there, long after the pair split in 1984.

The boots

Dr. Martens introduced the eight eyelet 1460 boot on 1 April 1960, and the three eyelet 1461 shoe followed a year later. By the late 1970s they were popular among punks, according to Wikipedia.

Twenty pairs of Dr. Martens on within sit at parlor23 in Toronto, from CAD 200 to CAD 600 with a CAD 300 median. Of those, 17 carry a collaborator's name in the title. The 1460 x Pleasures in patent leather from 2020 is CAD 250, and the 1461 x Engineered Garments in black from 2018 is CAD 225.

Those two are collaborations, not plain 1460s, and a plain eight eyelet pair is what you should want first. For pull on boots instead of laces, see biker boots.

The jacket

Irving Schott first made the zip front Perfecto leather motorcycle jacket at Schott NYC in 1928, and the Ramones wore Schott Perfecto jackets in the 1970s.

At Due West in Toronto, black leather jackets start at CAD 695 with the COOR goat skin leather jacket. The Daily Paper leather jacket is CAD 755 and the DOMREBEL leather jacket in size S is CAD 829.

These are black leather jackets in that spirit, and a jacket is the one thing here worth paying real money for. Before you do, check the hide, the zips and the sizes that are left, and read how to check a leather jacket.

The rest is tartan, pins and studs, and you can make it

Westwood brought tartan into punk at Seditionaries in 1976. The COOR tartan shirt in blue is CAD 325 and the Carne Bollente tartan jacket is CAD 355. Sage Nash bondage pants at CAD 315 and a red Piet studded belt at CAD 295 are the two things that are hard to make at home.

I would skip the 44 Label Group safety pins tee at CAD 359, because real pins through your own black shirt do the job. A regular safety pin costs almost nothing, so the only reason to pay is that you want the silver one. That means the Emanuele Bicocchi safety pin necklace at CAD 525 or the Chrome Hearts safety pin earring at Utopia for CAD 2,000.

"I am not advocating violence, but I'm demanding freedom." Vivienne Westwood, 1977.

Punk also travelled. Jun Takahashi sang in a Sex Pistols cover band in Tokyo before he started Undercover menswear in 1990, and our Undercover note tells the rest. His motto is "We Make Noise Not Clothes," and the Undercover graphic tee is CAD 329.

Rick Owens menswear has Ramone sneakers from CAD 700. In Vogue's review published 5 March 2026, Owens said, "There's been punk rock, there's been glitter rock," and "I just missed that kind of energy."

Common questions

What makes an outfit punk?

A punk outfit is heavy boots and a black leather jacket with tartan, chains, studs or cotton you ripped and pinned yourself. That mix formed at 430 King's Road by 1976, when Seditionaries put bondage wear beside biker leather. On within, the Punk and Rock edit gathers 159 items if you want ready made clothes beside your own shirt.

Why do punks wear spikes?

Studs and zips came into the look in 1972 through biker leather at 430 King's Road, and chains came with Seditionaries in 1976. Westwood told a journalist in 1977 that she meant her clothes to cause a confrontation. Many punks could not afford the shop, so some made their own.

What are the different subcultures of punk rock?

According to Wikipedia, the styles include anarcho punk, hardcore punk, pop punk, skate punk, street punk, Oi and crust punk. For the darker end of the look, read goth fashion brands.
