What do Nike Mind slides do? Massage yes, focus unproven

Nike Mind slides press 22 foam nodes into your soles as you walk, and Nike says that sharpens focus, but it has published no study.

Nike Mind slides press 22 foam nodes into your soles as you walk, which Nike says sharpens focus before a game. Erling Haaland was one of hundreds who tested them over five years, by Nike's count.

Nike, on the shelf.

Nike's announcement of 23 October 2025 says the shoes are "scientifically shown to activate key sensory areas of the brain." It cites no study.

I would buy them at CAD 120 for the walk to the rink, not for the exam. The feeling under your foot is real, the brain claim is unproven, and both can be true.

Quick facts

  • The nodes: 22 foam nodes per shoe, Nike, 23 October 2025
  • The price: US$95 for the Mind 001, US$145 for the Mind 002; CAD 120 and CAD 180 on Nike Canada
  • On sale: since 8 January 2026, wide release 18 August 2026 in the US
  • The evidence: no Nike study published as of 16 October 2026
  • The fit: size up if you wear a half size; US Mind 001 in whole sizes only, M 4 to M 21
  • On within: 13 Mind 001 slides at Utopia, CAD 250 to 450, read 16 October 2026

The 22 nodes pass the ground up to your foot

In Nike's launch release, the nodes are bonded to a flexible material that resists water and act as "pistons and gimbals" as you walk. They pass up "the feeling, and even the texture, of the ground."

Nike's article of 12 December 2025 says they help "disengage the default mode network", the part of your brain that wanders when idle. They do it, Nike says, by engaging the part that handles touch and movement.

The Nike Sport Research Lab began in September 1980 in a small warehouse in Exeter, New Hampshire, and now has a motion capture room with 400 cameras. It moved into the LeBron James Innovation Center in the fall of 2020, Nike's archive says. Mind was over 10 years in the making, Nike says.

Nike has published no study

Matthew Nurse, Nike's chief science officer, said on 23 October 2025 that EEG tests "measured changes in brain activity in the areas linked to focus and presence."

The Verge wrote on 24 October 2025 that "Nike hasn't released the scientific evidence", and Nike's spokesperson, Jay Paavonpera, promised it a white paper in "a couple weeks". None had appeared by 16 October 2026.

In The Conversation on 27 January 2026, Atom Sarkar, a professor of neurosurgery at Drexel, wrote that "brain activation alone does not equal cognitive enhancement." More activity on a scan is not better focus, and nobody outside Nike has the data.

One reviewer felt the nodes, another felt no calm

Ben Felderstein wrote in Complex on 15 January 2026, "Without a doubt, you feel it." He also wrote, "It kind of feels like a foot massage, but it's just not necessarily a very good one." The nodes stop at the toe.

Connor Jewiss wore a pair at CES in Las Vegas, walking about 30,000 steps a day. On 9 January 2026 he wrote in Stuff, "Did I feel a noticeable calm descend over me? Not quite."

Thomas Tuchel, England's manager, told The New York Times his players say they focus better in meetings in these shoes. As Runner's World reported on 11 February 2026, he added: "Maybe the most important thing is that they believe it."

The massage is real. The focus is Nike's word.

Wear them before the game, and size up

Nike makes the Mind 001 and Mind 002 for before the game, and its December 2025 article adds recovery after it. (Nike's product pages call the slide a mule.)

The US Mind 001 comes in whole sizes, M 4 to M 21; the Mind 002 in half sizes, M 6 to M 15. For other models, read how Nike shoes fit, model by model.

Before you pay for a pair

Start with Nike: the Mind 001 costs CAD 120 in Canada, US$95 in the US and £79.99 in Britain. Wide release came on 18 August 2026 in the US and 20 August in Britain and Europe.

If Nike is out of your size or colour, try Nike sandals and Mind 001 slides on resale. The 13 Mind 001 slides at Utopia run CAD 250 to 450, and even the lowest is more than twice Nike Canada's CAD 120. I would pay that only for a colour Nike has sold out.

Common questions

Can I wear Nike Mind slides outside?

Yes, for a walk: both have rubber pods near the toe and heel for traction. Nike's product pages never say outdoor.

Do Nike Mind slides run small?

Yes: Nike says to size up if you wear a half size. Its Australian page says to order a full size up.

Are Nike mind slides worth the money?

As a CAD 120 pregame slide from Nike, yes in my view; as a focus tool, the evidence is unpublished. The pairs above start at CAD 250, so check Nike first.
