What to wear to London Fashion Week, invited or not

Accreditation, an invitation, or the kerb

If you are accredited, you are working, and working clothes are the brief. Nine hours, four buildings, a cloakroom nowhere in the plan. If you are a guest of a house, dress in that house's register and one degree under its runway. A Simone Rocha room and a Barbour room want different things from you, and both would rather you got the fabric right than the volume loud.

And if you are on the kerb, you are in the largest and least regulated part of the week. Nobody checks a list there. The photographers work the pavement because the pavement is where the clothes move, and the honest thing about that scrum is that it has become a casting call: half the people in frame are dressed for the frame and visibly cold by six. Dress for a day in your own city that happens to be photographed.

September in London is stable in temperature and wild in rain

The temperature is the boring part, which is why it is useful. Pleats are having a documented rather than an editorial moment, and a pleated stole is the most useful object you can own for a week of cold buildings and warm pavements.

The better reading of that index is that restraint and volume rank beside each other rather than replacing each other. Massimo Dutti jumped eight places into the top ten on a 43 percent demand increase, Phoebe Philo entered at eighteen, The Row sat at twelve, and in the same table Skims jelly shoes were up 2,170 percent. Nobody is winning that argument, which frees you from taking a side.

The week rations invitations and has never once rationed the pavement.

Take one thing that photographs and let the rest be plain. A stole, a coat in a colour, one earring, a bag with a shape. Then dress the rest of the body for standing on wet stone for an hour, which is the actual assignment.

Before you leave the flat

Check the venue on the schedule the morning of, because locations move across the city and the walk between two of them is often longer than the show. Eat first; nobody will feed you. If the plan is to shop the week rather than watch it, the good shops are not on the schedule at all.
