Designer boutiques in London, sorted by what they buy

The best buying in London happens outside Mayfair, and it has for a while. Dover Street Market sits at 18 to 22 Haymarket, SW1Y 4DG, and the door is round the corner on Orange Street. The rooms that decide what a season looks like are on Chiltern Street, on Brewer Street, on Hanbury Street, and on a Belgravia back lane that used to be a dairy.

Matchesfashion went into administration in March 2024, roughly three months after Frasers Group bought it for £52 million. Everything below was checked against each shop's own site in August 2026: street number, hours, whether the door opens at all.

Mayfair keeps the flagships, Belgravia kept the shop

Mayfair does very little buying now. Mount Street and Bond Street are mono brand territory, where the decisions were taken in Paris or Milan and the London room is a lease with a doorman attached. The exception is Browns, at 39 Brook Street since 2021, in a listed building the Milan practice Dimorestudio restored for it. Browns has not been independent since Farfetch bought it in 2015, and Farfetch itself was bought out of administration by Coupang in 2024, which you can read off the racks: the buy is broad, safe and group sized. Wrong for you if you want a buyer with an argument rather than a floor that photographs well.

egg has been in a converted dairy at 36 Kinnerton Street since 1994. Maureen Doherty opened it to sell, in the shop's own words, the beautiful and everyday, and the coffee is brewed and the lunch cooked in the kitchen upstairs. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 to 6, Monday by appointment. Wrong for you if you arrive with a list of labels, because nothing here is arranged so you can find one.

Marylebone is the street where the buyer is still in the room

Trunk Clothiers at 8 Chiltern Street was opened by Mats Klingberg in 2010 and reads like one person's standing wardrobe argument rather than a category plan: Aspesi, Boglioli, Caruso, Incotex, Kaptain Sunshine, Paraboot, Alden and Ring Jacket beside a house line, weighted to Japan, Europe and the United States. Eleven to seven on weekdays, eleven to six on Saturday, noon to five on Sunday. Klingberg opened a second shop in Zurich in 2018, which tells you where the customer goes in February. Wrong for you if you want a logo on the outside of anything.

Up the same street, Mouki Mou is at 29 Chiltern Street, where Maria Lemos named the shop for her daughter and says so plainly on her own site: Mouki is the name of my daughter, and also a shop in Chiltern Street. She asks customers to slow down, to look and touch and smell, which is either the point or the problem depending on your afternoon. Wrong for you if you are shopping between meetings.

Soho and Haymarket buy the thing that is not proven yet

Machine-A is at 13 Brewer Street, W1F 0RH, open noon to eight Monday to Saturday and noon to six on Sunday, and calls itself an independent concept store dedicated to the discovery of what is next. In practice that means Rick Owens and Vivienne Westwood on the same floor as designers with one season behind them, plus the streetwear the same buyer takes seriously. Noon is an accurate read of who walks Brewer Street before lunch. Wrong for you if you need a suit by Friday.

Dover Street Market runs 11 to 7 Monday to Saturday and noon to 6 on Sunday, and works less like a shop than like a building let to houses, each stand built by the label standing in it. Go for the floors that change. Wrong for you if you want anyone to sell you anything; the staff will leave you alone, which most people want and some people find cold.

The buying that matters moved out of Mayfair years ago, and Mayfair kept the doormen.

Notting Hill buys for the house as much as the body

Couverture & The Garbstore opened in 2008 at 188 Kensington Park Road, W11 2ES, in three floors of what was once a timberyard: Couverture womenswear, jewellery and homeware above, The Garbstore menswear and accessories in the basement, and the shop's own TDR line running through both. Hours are 10 to 6 Monday to Saturday, noon to 5 on Sunday. The only room here where a coat and a blanket were plainly chosen by the same person. Wrong for you if you want evening clothes.

The east buys the room, not the rail

Goodhood is at 15 Hanbury Street, E1 6QR, on the run between Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane, open 11 to 7 Monday to Saturday and 11 to 6 on Sunday. By its own account it spent seven years on Coronet Street and ten on Curtain Road before this address, which is a long time for a shop people still describe as new, and the current space carries menswear, womenswear, homeware and beauty under one roof. Wrong for you if tailoring is the reason for the trip.

Before you go

Chiltern Street does not open until eleven on a weekday and Brewer Street not until noon, so an early start is an hour in a coffee shop. egg closes on Sunday and opens Monday by appointment only, so build the week around it rather than hoping.

Do not plan a VAT refund. Checked at gov.uk in August 2026: in Great Britain you can only buy goods free of VAT if the shop sends them straight to an address outside the United Kingdom, so carrying the box out yourself does not qualify, whatever a travel site with a 2026 date stamp tells you. Ship from the shop or pay the VAT and stop thinking about it.
