What to wear to Milan Fashion Week when you were not invited

Prada opens on Tuesday 22 September at 14:00, Giorgio Armani closes on Sunday the 27th at 11:00, and the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana prints the window as 22 to 28 September. Inside it sit roughly ninety events and some sixty shows, fifty four physical and six digital. CNMI's own site says the whole thing is accessible on an invitation basis only, which is the polite phrasing for a week that happens in your city without you.

That is not a complaint. The invited spend seven days in cars, in lift queues and in dark rooms where the clothes arrive at the end. Everyone else gets the better half: the pavement outside the venue, Brera at seven, Tortona while the buyers are in town.

What actually opens its doors

Vogue World lands on 22 September in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, on a theme of craft against AI; past editions sold public tickets, and as of late August the access format had not been announced. WHITE Milano runs 24 to 27 September in Tortona on industry registration; the free runway is the street outside, where buyers from more than a hundred countries work the same few blocks. At 10 Corso Como, the Viktor&Rolf exhibition Spectrum opens to the public on 25 September and hangs to 22 November.

The plain doorway at Corso Como 10 gives onto a pebbled courtyard under the Bosco Verticale's balconies, and people dress for it as seriously as for anything hanging inside. The gallerist Carla Sozzani opened it in 1990. (The fashion floor stopped being the only reason anyone comes some years ago.)

The clothes, and how much of the week to take

What walks this week is spring 2027. What hangs in the shops is fall 2026, and the two barely speak.

The material story of fall 2026 is chocolate brown suede: loafers, slouchy espresso shoulder bags, knee high boots that walked nearly every autumn runway. Suede reads beautifully at seven in the evening and loses to wet pavement. Leopard has been promoted to neutral, and Marni's coat makes that argument better than any explanation. Editors have called 2026 an era of loud luxury, all volume and block colour and chunky jewellery; the suit skirt and the cigarette cut jean will outlast it.

By the last week of September the city has come down off its 25 to 27 degree first half to days of 20 to 23 and evenings of 14 to 16. Trench and knit weather. The error is dressing for the afternoon: Bottega Veneta shows at 20:00 on the Saturday, and at 20:00 you want the coat.

Aperitivo hour is the actual runway

The geography does not move. In Brera at 19:00 the wine bars push the crowd onto the stone setts of Via Fiori Chiari, and the nightly show is heels negotiating cobbles with a glass in hand: wear a block heel. Later the design and fashion people land at Bar Basso over a Negroni Sbagliato in an oversized goblet.

Where those clothes come from

Biffi has traded on Corso Genova 6 since 1959, deliberately outside the Quadrilatero, and the buy runs institutionally wide: Khaite, Cecilie Bahnsen and Simone Rocha share a floor with Barbour and On Running. Its sister store Banner, at Via Sant'Andrea 8/A, is marked temporarily closed for renovation on biffi.com as of August, so Corso Genova is the whole of Biffi in Milan this month.

Antonia has two doors and they are not equivalent. Antonia Giacinti started it in 1999 as an accessories boutique; Via Cusani 5 is the Palazzo Cagnola room, while the 2022 store inside Portrait Milano at Via Sant'Andrea 10, in the courtyard of a sixteenth century archbishop's seminary, takes the rising international names. That is the sharper buy, and the reason to walk past the Gucci wall a street away.

Antonioli fills 530 square metres of a 1920s silent cinema at Via P. Paoli 1-4. Claudio Antonioli opened his first shop in Piazza Lima in 1987 and moved here in January 2003; the buy runs past two hundred labels with Rick Owens and Comme des Garçons at the centre. It leans dark; if you dress in colour, this is not your afternoon.

Imarika at Via Giovanni Morelli 1, Porta Venezia, belongs to the sisters Benedetta and Maria Bevilacqua and has run over forty years on a textile first edit: Daniela Gregis's hand loomed knits, Injiri's Indian handwovens, Comme des Garçons. No help if you want a logo.

Cavalli e Nastri keeps four Milan addresses for vintage from the 1950s to the 2000s, Chanel and Dior and Hermès among them: Via Brera 2, Via Gian Giacomo Mora 12 for women and 3 for men, and the showroom by appointment at Via Voghera 11. Pricing is gallery grade; nobody stumbles into a bargain here.

Slam Jam, which Luca Benini started in Ferrara in 1989, trades in Milan out of Spazio Maiocchi at Via Achille Maiocchi 5, Tuesday to Saturday. Wait and See on Via Santa Marta 14 belongs to Uberta Zambeletti, sells its own line beside the colour first mix, and has switched the internet off: the site says, in capitals, that you find them in the shop only. The stock is invisible until you are standing in it, which is either the problem or the point.

Before you cross town

The Brera cluster is the efficient hour: Cavalli e Nastri at Via Brera 2 and Antonia's Palazzo Cagnola on Via Cusani sit ten minutes apart, and the walk ends on Via Fiori Chiari by seven. Wait and See opens seven days, Mondays only from 15:30, so a Monday morning tram to Via Santa Marta is wasted. Ring Via Voghera 11 first; the showroom is by appointment.

Two checks before you buy. Confirm the door is open, because Banner is not and no listing says so. Confirm the season, because FW26 on a rail in September is this winter's coat, not the spring thing that just walked.
