What to wear to a Halloween party: one real piece

For a Halloween party on Saturday 31 October 2026, wear one real piece of clothing with total conviction. Ask Cindy Sherman. As an art student, Tate says, she would dress up for parties as a man, a pregnant woman or a television star.

Then she made 69 black and white self portraits, the Untitled Film Stills, casting herself as women from films of the 1950s and 1960s. In college she had collected discarded clothes from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. "It was easy and cheap to collect all kinds of things in those days," she said, in a line Tate quotes.

Halloween is the one night everyone else gets to do what she did. A costume sealed in a plastic bag costs less, but the costumes people remember are made of clothes, and clothes outlive the night. A black leather jacket is three costumes (Brando, a Ramone, a greaser), a hooded black dress is two, and rabbit ears are one.

All black, plus a pair of rabbit ears

Wear all black and add one thing that is plainly a joke. Make it ears.

Charles Jeffrey started Loverboy in 2014 as a monthly queer club night at Vogue Fabrics in Dalston, to fund his masters at Central Saint Martins. The label of the same name grew out of those nights, Creative Review reports.

His Chunky Rabbit Beanie does it in yellow: a chunky knit of 80% lambswool and 20% nylon with oversized floppy ears, CAD 420 (about US$297). The Rabbit Ears Hoody puts them on a hood, CAD 675. Everything under the ears should be black (they carry the whole costume, so the black can be anything you already own).

If ears feel too sweet, a skull does the same job.

One leather jacket, three costumes

Irving Schott introduced the first modern leather motorcycle jacket in 1928 and named it the Perfecto, after his favourite cigar. It sold for $5.50 at a Harley-Davidson dealer. Schott's own history says it was built from heavy leather with an asymmetrical front, to block the wind and protect the rider.

Then came Brando. The Perfecto One Star was on screen in The Wild One in 1953 and 1954, and school systems across the United States banned the jacket. All four Ramones wore vintage Perfectos on the cover of their debut album.

Zip it for Brando, wear it open for a Ramone, add a comb for the greaser. For the Ramone, the shoe already has the name: Rick Owens's Jumbo Lace Leather Ramones Low Top Sneaker, a single pair in a US men's 10, is CAD 1,100.

The jacket itself comes from a leather shop or a vintage rack. Reviewers of Doc's Leathers on Queen Street West in Toronto name leather jackets 17 times, and at Mister Freedom in Los Angeles they mention an army and navy surplus feel.

A long black dress is a widow or a witch

Black used to mean service, shop assistants and mourning, the V&A notes. In October 1926, American Vogue predicted that a black Chanel crêpe de chine day dress would be "the frock that all the world will wear". The little black dress was dubbed the Ford of fashion.

A century on, Issey Miyake prints its Hands Of Lover Pleats Asymmetric Dress on soft polyester crêpe de chine, CAD 1,370 in a size S (2).

The Avavav Disa Draped Dress is a black georgette maxi with its own layering hood, made in Lithuania, CAD 599 in XS or M on the women's dresses shelf. Hood up, it is a witch with no hat needed. Hood down, a widow.

Buy the costume you would still wear on a Tuesday in November.

The sneaker that glows from the midsole down

Nike introduced the Air Force 1 in 1982, the first basketball sneaker to house Nike Air. The Skeleton arrived in 2018, and nearly two years later it came back for Halloween in starfish orange and black. Its skeletal graphics run onto the insole, and Nike says the glow in the dark midsole and outsole take after a jack o' lantern.

Four Halloween pairs sit in one shop, one size each, so start with your size. In a men's 9.5, the 2020 Orange Skeleton, the one that glows, is CAD 300.

An 8.5 is the expensive size. The SB Dunk Low Night of Mischief costs CAD 700 there, enough for two Orange Skeletons with change.

The best costume shop is a vintage rack

Any city has one, and the reviews say so. At Miami Twice, reviewers name costumes 20 times, and at Exile Vintage in Toronto's Kensington Market, 10.

In Paris, Kiliwatch on rue Tiquetonne is a friperie by its reviewers' own word, open until 20:00 on Saturdays. In east London, Nordic Poetry and ATIKA London both stay open until 19:00 on Saturday, and the 31st is one. For the dress, reviewers of Knee Deep Vintage in Chicago name dresses 13 times.

Before paying for vintage leather, read leather grades, and what the label hides and the first checks when buying vintage designer. Then the one rule: buy the piece for November and style it for the 31st.

Sherman, whose favourite genre is horror, made a career of the thing everyone else does once a year.
