Toronto Burlesque Festival 2026: what to wear each night
The Toronto Burlesque Festival runs 12 to 15 November 2026 at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre with no dress code, so dress to each night's title.

The Toronto Burlesque Festival returns from 12 to 15 November 2026 at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, 12 Alexander Street. It came back in October 2024 after several years away, so this is its third year back, with four nights under one theme, Reverie. Its home, schedule, policies and accessibility pages, read today, post no dress code and no age rule.

Coperni, YVMIN and Emanuele Bicocchi, on the shelf.
I think you should dress to the night's title, not to a night at the theatre. The festival named each showcase, and the names read like the dress code it never wrote: Joyful Rebellion, Wit & Whimsy, Gilded Glamour, Through the Looking Glass.
Black is always welcome if you think the sparkle belongs on stage, and one piece that answers the title is enough to join in. The rule people miss is the bottle on your dresser: the festival lists scent free shows among its access commitments, so skip the perfume.

Joyful Rebellion on Thursday, for the one who stays in black
Opening night, 6 to 10 p.m., is a cocktail reception for media, performers, VIPs and invited guests, with the 2026 Coco Framboise Trailblazer Award. Coperni is my designer for it, for its story as much as its cut.
Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant won ANDAM's Creative Label Prize with it in 2014, stepped away in 2017 and relaunched it in 2018. A brand that left and came back, for a festival that did the same.
My pick is the Coperni Zip Ruffle Dress, a pencil cut in black gossamer with flower shaped ruffles at the neck and a hem of spiralling zips. It is made in France and $729, down from $1,750, and the zips do the rebelling while you stay in black. For one bare shoulder, the Coperni Asymmetric Flower Gown adds 3D floral appliqués and a thigh high slit for $499, from $995.

Wit & Whimsy on Friday, for jewellery with a sense of humour
On Friday the vendors' market comes first and the show after, between 6:30 and 10:30 p.m., so come early enough to browse. YVMIN suits a night called Whimsy, because it calls itself a lab for decorating the body rather than a fashion brand.
Xiaoyu Zhang and Min Li graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2012, opened their studio straight after and launched YVMIN in 2013. The YVMIN Bowknot Sharp Feather Earrings, a Shushu/Tong x YVMIN collaboration in silver tone copper, are $149, down from $245.
Wear them with the Toga Pulla pink calf hair heel: cross front straps with western studs on a block heel, made in Portugal, $199 from $695. There is one pair, in EU 35, so it is a find only if it fits.

Gilded Glamour on Saturday, gold at the neck or silver on the hand
The market returns on Saturday, 6 to 10:30 p.m., before a show headlined by Jezebel Express and Lou Lou la Duchesse de Rière. Gilded means coated in gold, so I would answer this title at the neck.
Emanuele Bicocchi was founded in 2010 in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany, and every piece is handmade in Italy in 925 sterling silver. The Fleury Cross Rose necklace at Due West is gold plated and covered in roses, a 2.3 by 3 cm cross on a 60 cm chain, $545. YVMIN's Long Tail Lace Bow Earring, brass plated 18k gold, puts the gold at the ear for $235.
If silver is more you, Tom Wood's Cushion Band Open Zirconia sets 200 white cubic zirconia stones on rhodium plated 925 sterling silver, $675. Mona Jensen founded the Norwegian brand in 2013, and it reimagined the traditional signet ring. (The band has 200 stones and the brand more than 200 retailers worldwide, a coincidence I enjoyed more than I should.)
Through the Looking Glass on Sunday, for the reader who only wants tea
Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., brings a high tea before the show, the closing brunch and a talk with the legend headliner, Lovey Goldmine of Las Vegas. For an afternoon of tea and talk, my answer is pleats.
Pleats Please Issey Miyake has been its own line since the spring and summer 1994 season. Each garment is sewn to shape first and pleated after, which is why it comes out light, easy to wear and washable.
The Pleats Please Classic Pleated Midi Dress in greige is a column whose side slits fold back and button at the shoulders, $745 and made in Japan. In a jacket, the Homme Plissé Basic Pleated Jacket in black is "portable and lightweight" and goes in the machine on cold, at $1,300 the dearest thing here.

The festival's story, from 2008 to its third year back
It began in 2008 as Northern Exposure, co founded by members of Skin Tight Outta Sight, Les Coquettes Nouveau Burlesque, Coco Framboise and others. They ran the first Strip Search for new performers at Goodhandy's.
From 2008 to 2019 it drew more than 20,000 audience members to more than 60 full length revues. Coco Framboise was artistic director from 2013 to 2019, and Thursday's award carries her name. It became a non profit in 2021 and has been at Buddies since 2025.
Its own line reads: "Since 2008, we have centered equity, bodily autonomy, creative freedom, and cultural preservation." Bodily autonomy is second on that list, and it is the closest thing to a dress code the festival has.
Four nights, four titles, and not one word about what to wear.
A standing spot against a floor seat
The festival offers a mix of standing places and ticketed floor seating, and the two ask for different things. Standing for a set means a block heel or a flat you can walk in. A floor seat means a bag small enough for your lap, and November means a coat for the walk to Alexander Street.
Check your ticket for its start time. Showpass lists 12 November at 8:00 p.m., and the festival's schedule says 6 p.m.
A ramp at the entrance is used by everyone, free N95 masks are handed out on the way in, and ASL interpretation runs at every show. The washrooms are downstairs by a lift that needs an attendant, with ten private stalls, two barrier free, none designated by gender.
Near the theatre, within's directory lists 7 shops in Downtown Yonge, among them Pretty Pearls at 386 Yonge Street and Elite Xchange at 384 Yonge St #29. In Yorkville, The Narwhal Boutique at 1128 Yonge St carries Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent and 34 more designers. Most of the pieces above hang at WDLT117, 7 St Thomas Street.
From abroad, WDLT117 ships worldwide and Due West ships to the United States, both with duties unpaid, so the CAD 545 necklace can reach you before the festival.
The festival calls burlesque a genre rooted in satire and theatrical storytelling, and an audience that dresses to the title is in on the joke.
