What to wear to a winter wedding: the hour, not the season

Dress for the hour on the card; December adds only the cold, an average high of 6.8°C in New York. The cold changes your coat, your fabric and your shoes. It changes nothing on the card.

On 29 September 2026 a guest wrote on r/Weddingattireapproval that the dress code "says cocktail on the website, semi formal on the invitations." Two words for one party, and a guest in the middle. That same day a sister of the bride, with a semi formal wedding that Friday, wrote: "There is no time left."

The Emily Post Institute has taught etiquette since Emily Post's first book, Etiquette, in 1922. Its guest attire page settles it in one line: "The wedding invitation and the time of the wedding will be your best guide to its formality." A church at two is a daytime wedding in any weather; a dinner at seven is an evening wedding, even in a barn.

Velvet fans will disagree. Keep the velvet, and let the hour set its length.

A daytime card against an evening one

Most of the seven posts on that forum in two days asked what a code means, and Emily Post's table answers by the hour. By day, a formal card asks for a cocktail or dressy afternoon dress, and semi formal asks for a dressy afternoon dress, suit or pantsuit.

By night, formal means a long evening dress or dressy cocktail dress, and semi formal a cocktail dress or dressy pantsuit. The tuxedo is required only when the card says black tie, and that code has its own note: what the black tie dress code asks for.

So at an evening hour, cocktail on the website and semi formal on the invitation point to one dress: a cocktail dress.

For a ceremony in daylight, knit counts as dressy

RUOHAN began in 2021 with 37 pieces for autumn winter 2021, then showed in Shanghai and, from spring summer 2023, on the official Paris calendar. For autumn winter 2026, shown in its new Paris office, the label wrote that felting can make knitwear as dense as woven cloth. That is the case for knit by daylight.

The RUOHAN Bouvet Dress in bark, CAD 995, is 53% yak and 45% cashmere, and its maker says it "combines insulating warmth with a soft, airy feel." Twelve curved panels shape the flared hem.

MM6 Maison Margiela's Folded Wool Dress in dark grey sharpens the same idea at CAD 1,345, and both read as Emily Post's dressy afternoon dress. (In a church, bring a stole for the sleeveless Bouvet; the etiquette page lists bare shoulders among the things a religious service may object to.)

For the evening, pleats that go in the wash

Issey Miyake's page, in Japanese, says the pleats first shown in the women's collection in 1988 became Pleats Please, a line of its own from spring summer 1994. Its technique is garment pleating: sewn into shape first, pleated after, and by the page's account light, easy to wear and washable in water.

The Pleats Please Issey Miyake Mellow Pleats Sleeveless High Neck Dress in charcoal runs long, with side slits and pockets, for CAD 970. Pockets at a wedding mean the lipstick has somewhere to go. For a cocktail card, the Pleated Midi Dress in cool grey is CAD 1,040.

Leather works after dark too. Helmut Lang's Nappa Bubble Dress is black lamb leather through and through at CAD 899; the rest hang on the dresses shelf.

For the walk and the photographs, leather from Pescia

In December the average high is 2.6°C in Toronto, with 8.4 days of snow, and London's sunshine totals 55 hours for the whole month. You stand in that for the photographs and walk in it from the car.

The Conceria Guidi Rosellini was founded in 1896 in Pescia, Tuscany, by Guido Guidi, Giovanni Rosellini and Gino Ulivo. Tanners and shoemakers have had a guild there since the 14th century. Guidi, led now by Ruggero Guidi, is a tannery first, and its boots are leather in the upper, the lining and the sole.

The weather picks the coat, the cloth and the shoe. The hour on the card picks the rest.

For him, a dark suit at almost every hour

Emily Post's men's rows ask for a dark suit at almost every hour, and at a semi formal daytime wedding a blazer with grey flannels and a tie. A rented or borrowed dark suit answers that row as well as a new one.

Jun Takahashi started Undercover with a friend in 1990, while a student at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo. He showed his first collection, autumn winter 1994 to 1995, in Tokyo, and first showed in Paris in 2002. His grey Eye Button Felted Wool Blazer, all wool at CAD 2,295, is the blazer for that daytime row.

Homme Plissé Issey Miyake began in 2013 on the same garment pleating, and its page says the clothes do not wrinkle, dry quickly and wear light. Its Tailored Pleats 1 Jacket in black costs CAD 1,295.

Underfoot, the black Guidi Classic Derby 792Z is leather through the upper, lining and sole, CAD 1,375. For the friend who likes a story, a pre owned Supreme and Loro Piana alpaca blazer in size M goes for CAD 400. The week before, read the card and then the hour

When two codes disagree, dress for the one that covers the later hour. If you are the sister with no time left, start with the dressiest dress you own, a stole and a shoe you can walk in. Order early, and book the tailor the day a piece arrives.
