Wear a warm coat and whatever you feel good in, because the building has no dress code. The company's own opening scene is the best dress code you will get: "snowballs, hats, cozy scarves and Uncle Nikolai's dramatic red coat".

Tickets: $72 up, or $12 to stand

Tickets start at $72, and the price depends on where you sit. A standing ticket is $12, on sale at 11am on the day of the show, or at 9am for the 11am shows on 24 and 31 December. You buy it online with the code STAND or by phone, two per person, and pick it up at the box office, which opens 2 hours before.

Rush tickets at half price exclude The Nutcracker, so do not wait for one. The company's advice for standing tickets is the only clothing advice on its page: "wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to stand for the duration of the performance".

What to wear to The Nutcracker in Toronto

The building is run by the Canadian Opera Company, and its page says so plainly: "There is no dress code at the Four Seasons Centre". People come in "everything from formal attire to jeans", and the page asks you to leave off perfume, because of allergies.

So dress for a December walk, two hours in a seat and a theatre full of children in velvet.

The coat is the outfit on the way there. To match the first act, Canada Goose's Expedition Parka comes in red at Due West: CAD 1,695 for women in XS, down from CAD 2,095. The men's in S is CAD 1,745, also down from CAD 2,095.

IN STOCK NOW · CANADA GOOSE

For a child, Canada Goose's red pom toque is CAD 115, down from CAD 150.

Inside, you sit for two hours, so pick something that doesn't crease. Issey Miyake pleats its clothes after they are sewn, so the pleats hold. Pleats Please's Classic midi dress is CAD 745, and Homme Plissé's pleated turtleneck in navy is CAD 595.

Those two are at WDLT117 in Yorkville, and the rest of the city's shops are in the Toronto directory.

Dress for the first act: a good coat, a scarf and one red thing.

If you want the general rules, what to wear to the ballet covers those, and the winter coat guide covers the coat. Due West is on the same street as the theatre, at 431 Queen Street West, and the Queen West shopping guide has the rest of the street.

Taking a child, and getting there

The company counts a child as two to 13, advises against bringing most children under five, and does not admit anyone under two. Two hours with one intermission is long for a five year old, so if yours has never sat through a film, start with a shorter show.

Doors open an hour before, and latecomers are seated only at a suitable break, so a late arrival can miss the opening party. There are direct entrances from Osgoode station and the underground garage, the 501 Queen streetcar stops at University Avenue, and Union Station is a 10 minute walk.

James Kudelka's production opened at the O'Keefe Centre, now Meridian Hall, on 21 December 1995, and over 1.3 million people have seen it. Before that, the company danced an Act II excerpt in 1952, then Celia Franca's full length version every year from 1964 to 1994.
