What to wear to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto

The Royal Winter Fair prints three dress codes in 2026, and which one applies depends on your ticket. The Fair runs November 6 to 15 at Exhibition Place.

A day in the barns asks for comfortable shoes. A VIP seat at the evening horse show can ask for a blazer, or for Black Tie.

The three codes, as printed

For the Fair itself, the organizer recommends comfortable clothes and shoes, so you can be ready to walk throughout The Royal. The halls of the Enercare Centre, the Horse Palace and the Coliseum are a long walk end to end.

The codes apply only to Platinum and Gold VIP tickets for the Royal Horse Show bought directly from The Royal. From November 6 to 10 the code is Smart Casual / Business Casual, and from November 11 to 14 it is Black Tie.

The horse show's own page puts it more loosely: come as you are or dress to impress. The Tanbark Club, the lounge for Royal Terrace and VIP seat holders, adds "*Dress code in effect."

By day: the barns and the halls

Backpacks are allowed, subject to search, at standard sizes of 18 to 20 inches high. Keep it to one bag and leave the tote at home.

Smart Casual nights, November 6 to 10

Smart Casual / Business Casual means a jacket without a tie, or a knit and good trousers. A blazer over dark jeans sits inside the plain reading of Smart Casual. The 7:00 pm show on November 10 asks for it by name: "Get out your denim and diamonds."

November 7 is Red & White Night, so a red scarf or a white shirt joins in.

Black Tie nights, November 11 to 14

Black Tie at a horse show is the same as Black Tie anywhere: a dinner jacket, a bow tie, black shoes. The Giovanni Cavagna Tailored Jacket in black is $1,580 at WDLT117, in a 48, and Guidi's Classic Derby 792Z in black is $1,375.

The Saturday, November 14 show is the Longines FEI World Cup, with 24 top show jumping athletes. It sells out, so arrive by 6pm, and the Tanbark Club stays open until 2am.

The walk between the halls

November's normals give a mean high of 8.1°C, a low of 2.3°C and 70.8 mm of precipitation over 13 days. Evening coat check moves to the Coca-Cola Coliseum, so a warm coat over Black Tie costs nothing once you are inside.
