Why is Goyard so expensive? Hard to buy, by design
Why is Goyard so expensive? Its median ask is CAD 2,200, the highest of 90 designers priced, and its Canadian site shows a visitor no price.

Goyard is expensive because it is hard to buy, and its median ask, CAD 2,200, tops the 90 designers we price. On 9 October 2026 its Canadian site showed a visitor no price at all. That blank is most of the answer.

Goyard, on the shelf.
In 1974 Jean-Michel Signoles bought a vintage Goyard trunk in a Paris antique shop. In 1998 he bought the company that made it. Goyard's own history says he rebuilt it "with complete disregard for marketing tactics", and, in our words, away from mass production.
In 2021 Vogue's Alice Cary noted that Goyard's Instagram showed only still lifes and short clips, never a model or a famous face. A Reddit thread on handbags asks, "How come no one really talks about Goyard bags?"
The craft is real, and we grant it. But scarcity sets the price you see, and Goyard keeps supply tight on purpose. A resale card holder shows how much.

The canvas is the first thing you pay for
Goyard's family came from Clamecy in Burgundy, where the men were log drivers who floated firewood from the Morvan to Paris. They wore a coated linen and cotton cloth for the work. In 1892 Edmond Goyard made the Goyardine from it, and its dots form a Y, the middle letter of the family name.
A ground colour goes on bare linen and cotton, then three layers of colour by screen printing. Goyard calls the exact process "strictly confidential". It says the canvas came out hard wearing, flexible and waterproof, while other trunk makers still used plain linen.
Production stopped after the Second World War and came back only in 1998. Four totes on the shelf are the place to see what that costs, none with a grade.
Smaller is not cheaper: the Anjou Tote Mini in green asks CAD 4,500, the most of the four. The Saint Louis Tote PM sits at CAD 3,000 in orange and CAD 3,300 in black, and the GM in black at CAD 3,500.

The hands are real, and Goyard says where
Goyard's own words put the handwork on its trunks. Every trunk is made by hand in Carcassonne, numbered, and marked with the initials of the person who made it, over several weeks.
The painted stripes and initials, called marquage, are done entirely by hand with colours made from natural pigments. Goyard dates its founding to 1853 and has kept its shop on rue Saint-Honoré since 1834, at number 233 since the street was renumbered in 1856.
Its Jouvence and Saint Sulpice pages say made in France. The Jouvence toiletry bag is a re issue of a clutch from the 1960s. It runs CAD 2,600 as a GM in black and CAD 2,500 as an MM in navy blue.

At the top, the Boston 50 in black is CAD 7,500. A personalised piece cannot be returned unless it arrives faulty or damaged, so the hand painted initials are a one way purchase.
The short supply sets the number
In 1998 Signoles opened new workshops in France and boutiques across Europe, the Americas and Asia, by Goyard's history page. Goyard's Canadian site listed 10 boutiques and counters on 9 October 2026, from 699 Madison Avenue in New York to Ginza Mitsukoshi in Tokyo.
Eight are in the US, one is in Tokyo and one is at The Bellavita in Taipei. None is in Canada. The list leaves out Paris and London, so it is not a count of the world.
Online, 128 products sit under "Available online", a selection for account holders. A visitor sees no price. The Saint Sulpice card wallet page says "In stock" and offers "Contact us" where a price would be.
Limited colours come and go beside the 11 permanent ones Signoles added to the black. Six Saint Sulpice card holders show what that does.
Orange, burgundy (the shop calls it Bordeaux) and black and tan ask CAD 800 each. The shop lists one as a Singapore exclusive in olive and khaki at CAD 1,000, and the limited edition khaki asks CAD 1,400.
Goyard's page for the Saint Sulpice gives its size as 10.5 by 7 cm and its weight as 30 g, with a yellow goatskin lining. It says the card holder is named for the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. So the limited khaki asks CAD 1,400 for 30 g of canvas and leather.
Same leather, same size, same 30 g. The colour adds CAD 600.

A second owner changes the math less than you think
A Goyard letterhead dated 24 June 1891 carries the arms of the British royal family, the Russian imperial family and the Great Seal of the United States. They are still on its trunk labels. Goyard says its travel pieces "do not change every season" and that "in a disposable society, Goyard is meant to last".
That is the case for buying second hand: the piece is built to outlast its first owner. Of the 48 pieces, 16 carry the shop's own resale grade and ask CAD 450 to 7,500, median CAD 2,200, the same median as the whole shelf.
A green Cap Vert PM with no grade on its listing is CAD 4,000. Two lightly used ones are CAD 3,000 each, CAD 1,000 less, and one comes with its original dust bag and receipt. You can read every grade in pre owned Goyard.
Worn once, the Alpin MM backpack in black reaches CAD 7,500, level with the Boston 50.
Before you pay
Goyard first, if you can reach a boutique or its online selection. Online you create an account, then log in. Goyard's terms say the checkout shows import duties and taxes for your country.
Personalised pieces cannot be returned unless faulty or damaged on arrival. Other return requests go in within 30 days.
Resale second. Read the grade and the photos, and ask what comes with the piece, such as a dust bag or a receipt. Utopia sells every piece as final sale and ships worldwide in 7 to 10 business days with tracking, free to Canada and the US over CAD 300.
The shop calls everything it sells 100% authentic. That is the shop's promise, not ours. For a Canadian buyer, a piece shipped from a shop in Canada pays no import duty.
To check a piece, read how to spot fake Goyard. For the full list, see what Goyard asks on the resale market, or the table at Goyard prices.
A price you can see is one you can argue with, and that is the thing Goyard keeps off the page.
Common questions
Why doesn't Goyard have prices?
On 9 October 2026 Goyard's Canadian site showed a visitor no price. Its plain pieces offered "Contact us" and its online pieces "Log in and order". Its pages give no reason, so we give none; resale shops print theirs, and Goyard prices lists CAD 450 to 7,500 as of 9 October 2026.
Can I just walk into Goyard and buy a bag?
You can visit one of the 10 boutiques and counters on Goyard's Canadian site, among them 699 Madison Avenue, 405 North Rodeo Drive and Ginza Mitsukoshi. None is in Canada.
That list leaves out the Paris shop at 233 rue Saint-Honoré and the Mayfair boutique on Mount Street, both named on Goyard's history page. Online, an account holder can log in and order from the online selection.
Is Goyard a luxury brand?
Yes: a Paris trunk maker on rue Saint-Honoré since 1834 that dates its founding to 1853, and whose 1891 letterhead carried the British royal arms. In 1936 Robert Goyard set up the Comité Vendôme with Charles Ritz and Louis Boucheron.
