Best designer jeans 2026: five camps, $195 to $18,000

The best designer jeans of 2026 on a live shelf: Marine Serre, Acne Studios, Amiri, Ksubi, Chrome Hearts and more, with Canadian prices read 2 October.

The cheapest of 220 pairs of men's jeans on within's shelves asks $195, and the dearest pair we found asks $18,000. Somewhere between those numbers is the pair you want.

Designer jeans are five camps, and they cost different money for different reasons.

The experimenters change the shape. The basics refine a classic five pocket. Los Angeles and Sydney distress it, the collectors turn it into jewellery, and Okayama weaves the cloth itself.

Camp one: the experimenters

This camp turns a jean into a garment you would not recognise from the back. All of it hangs at WDLT117, 7 St Thomas Street.

Marine Serre won the LVMH Prize in 2017, a year after graduating from La Cambre in Belgium. Her 2016 graduation collection introduced the crescent moon that still runs across her work, and her Moon Laser Grey Wash Straight Jeans ask $955.

Coperni is Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, who founded it in Paris in 2013 and won the ANDAM first collections prize in 2014. Its Denim Sarouel Pants in blue ask $1,270, the dearest pair in this camp.

Maison Margiela was founded in 1988 by Martin Margiela and Jenny Meirens, and its early labels were blank, sewn on with four white tacks. MM6 carries those habits into denim: the Painted Denim Straight leg Pants ask $970, and the plainer Straight leg 5 Pocket Jean in black $499.

Camp two: the refined five pocket

This camp sells a jean you could wear to an office, with the money going into the cut and the cloth rather than the idea.

Acne Studios began in Stockholm in 1996, out of a creative collective called ACNE. In 1997 Jonny Johansson made 100 pairs of raw denim jeans with red stitching and gave them to friends and family, so the label started with jeans.

On the resale side, a pre owned pair of Acne Max in used black cash stonewash asks $250, and the Penicilin 2021 5 Pocket Denim $800. At Due West, 431 Queen Street West, A.P.C.'s Martin Jeans in light blue ask $235 new.

Diesel hangs beside them, with the D Macro Jeans at $350 and the 2007 Zatiny in black at $250. (A $250 Zatiny and an $8,000 Chrome Hearts carpenter both come in black, which is about all they share.)

Camp three: Los Angeles and Sydney distress

Here a jean looks lived in on the first day. Rips, paint and repairs are the product.

Mike Amiri founded Amiri in Los Angeles in 2014, after making stage pieces by hand for Los Angeles performers. The Amiri Black Stack Workman Jean asks $800, and Gallery Dept's Ranger 5001 Denim Jeans in indigo blue also ask $800.

Ksubi started in 1999 on Sydney's Northern Beaches, when friends wanted jeans that fit better than what was on sale.

In 2001 it let live rats loose on its runway at Australian Fashion Week. Its Maxx Astral Kraft Jeans ask $420 at Due West. Purple Brand's P005 Heavy Destroyed Jeans ask $383.

Camp four: the collectors

Here a jean becomes a frame for leather and silver, and the prices stop following denim at all.

Chrome Hearts started in a Los Angeles garage in 1988, making leather motorcycle gear. Utopia, at 132 Cumberland Street, holds four pairs of its jeans at $4,000 to $18,000.

Matty Boy Anti Promo 99 Eyes Jeans ask $4,000 there, and a Turbo Diesel Carpenter pair $8,000.

At the top sit the Chrome Hearts Levi's 501 Paris Exclusive Patch Jeans in yellow, at $18,000. A plain 501 with a patch at that price is the clearest proof that this camp sells the patch, not the jean.

"Read the item, not the brand."

That line closed our Kapital jeans note, and it applies harder here. Older labels sit in this camp too, pre owned. Balmain, founded in Paris in 1945, has a Black Denim pair at $400.

Camp five: Okayama

Kapital started in 1985 in Kojima, the part of Okayama known for denim. Here the cloth is the point. Its 14 oz Slim Fit Denim Jeans in light wash ask $400, and the looms behind Japanese selvedge have their own note.

Song for the Mute, the Sydney label, makes a TKL Denim Pant in khaki at $779. Its fabric has long come from mills in Japan and Italy.

How to choose and how to buy

Start with the camp, not the label. A jean that changes your shape costs $499 to $1,270 among the experimenters, and one that works every day $235 to $800 in the refined five pocket.

A worn in look runs $383 to $800 on this shelf. Buy collectors' denim only if you would buy the silver. Then read the size line twice.

The women's page adds Nina Ricci's Wide Leg Jeans at $499 and Helmut Lang's Ski Jeans in ecru at $299.

One X question this season was blunt: "do rick owens jeans fit anyone". Fit is the real question in every camp, so read the measurements on the listing, not the size label.

Much of the pre owned denim sits at the Cumberland Street shop, whose own refund policy says all sales are final.
