Canada Goose sizing: trust the fit word, not the rule

Canada Goose makes four fits: Regular runs true, Slim runs small, and only Relaxed and Oversized say size down. So "Canada Goose runs big" is half right. Between 20 and 24 September, the week parka season opens, five readers on the brand's own subreddit asked what size to buy.

Size a Canada Goose by its fit word and your chest, and trust no rule that covers the whole label. That includes the brand's own. On 10 of 15 product pages, read 28 September 2026, the line by the size buttons says the product runs large and to size down.

Each asked a fair question. Two gave a height and a weight, and the chart asks for neither. It wants chest, waist, hip and sleeve, so every answer below starts with a tape measure.

Regular is the original fit, and the true one

Every size chart on the brand's pages is headed "Our original fit." Regular is that fit, "our original true to size fit" in the brand's words. That word reaches back to 1957, when Sam Tick founded Metro Sportswear in a small Toronto warehouse.

The Chilliwack Bomber is a Regular. The brand's resale site says it was developed for post war bush pilots in Canada's North; new, it costs CAD 1,450 at TEI 3. Its Arctic Tech fabric, 83 to 85 percent recycled polyester and 15 to 17 percent organic cotton, develops a patina, the brand says.

One reader wears a roomy medium in every Canada Goose parka, yet found a PBI Chilliwack in medium snug around the torso. PBI is the Polar Bears International line, begun in 2007. A bomber is not a parka.

Regular's own line says what to do: "Size up for a looser look or to wear with layers." (For scale, the brand's own Chilliwack model has a 35 inch chest and wears a medium, two sizes above where the chart puts that chest.) Among the women's coats, the Mystique is the Regular parka, CAD 1,795 at TEI 5.

Slim runs small, whatever the button says

Two readers asked about the Wyndham, a Slim parka at CAD 1,595. One gave 180 cm and 60 kg. Another is 186 cm, has slim arms and wants a hoodie under an older Wyndham.

Slim is the one fit that runs small. The Wyndham's Size & Fit tab reads "This item runs small, close to body fit," and says size up for a looser look.

Beside the size buttons on that same page, a second line says the product runs large and to size down. So do the MacMillan, Shelburne and women's Freestyle Vest pages, all three Slim. Both lines are there today.

When two lines on one page disagree, the tape measure settles it. A hoodie is more than the lightweight first layer Slim is drawn for, so the brand's advice points up a size. Look at the Wyndham model: a 38 inch chest in a medium, one size above where the chart puts a 38.

All four Slim parkas here say made in Canada. Staying made in Canada was Dani Reiss's pledge on becoming chief executive in 2001, after joining in 1997, and the brand runs seven factories there. On a close cut, the details stay small: the Wyndham's hood comes off, the MacMillan is quilted through, and the Rossclair's waist pulls in to an A line.

Relaxed takes after the Chateau

One reader owns a 2023 Carson Parka in medium and wants the closest coat on sale now. None of the 505 product pages on the brand's Canadian site is a Carson. Per the brand's resale site, the Carson was drawn from the Chateau Parka.

The Langford (CAD 1,695, TEI 4) is the coat the brand ties to that same parent today. It follows the silhouette of the 2011 Chateau, a little longer, with hidden snaps on the placket and seven pockets, four outside and three in.

Its fit word is Relaxed: "A loose, comfortable shape." Take your true size for a relaxed look or size down for a more fitted one. Do not assume it fits like the Carson.

The same resale site calls an older Fusion Fit Chateau "slim fitting." Same family, different fits.

Oversized was built for Antarctica

In the 1980s, the brand developed the Expedition Parka (CAD 1,995) for scientists at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. It became standard issue, nicknamed "Big Red." At TEI 5 it is rated for minus 30°C and below, with a drawcord inside at the waist.

Oversized follows the Relaxed rule: true size for the roomy look, size down for a more fitted one. The Expedition model has a 40 inch chest and wears a medium. That is exactly where the chart puts a 40.

A reader who wears XXL asked whether an XL Simcoe Zip Up Fleece (CAD 795), its largest size, would close. The fleece is Oversized too, a two layer high pile fleece made in Europe, with dropped shoulders and a 4 inch collar. By the brand's own rule, the XL is one size down: the fitted choice, not a gamble.

Before you buy, your chest against the chart

Measure the way the brand says. Take your chest around its fullest part, under the arms. Take your sleeve from the centre back of your neck, over the shoulder, down to the wrist, arm slightly bent.

On the men's chart, a small is a chest of 94 to 97 cm (37 to 38 in). A medium runs 99 to 102 cm (39 to 40 in), and a large 105 to 109 cm (41 to 43 in). Between two sizes, the brand says take the larger.

A women's small is Europe 38, with a bust of 86 to 89 cm and hips of 97 to 99. Medium is Europe 40: bust 91 to 94 cm, hips 102 to 104. No conversion needed in Paris or Milan.

Measure first. Then read the fit word, not the line by the buttons, and use how designer sizing runs, brand by brand for every other label.

Where to try one on, new or second hand

Try it on where you can. Each product page lets you check a store's stock and reserve a coat to collect. Stores include 244 Regent Street in London, 689 5th Avenue in New York, Ginza in Tokyo and Pieter Cornelisz Hooftstraat 29 in Amsterdam.

Second hand, the size is the whole risk. Generations grades every piece Excellent, Very Good, Good or Fair and takes returns for 15 days, but ships only to Canada and the US. An older coat can carry a Fusion Fit label, described there as made for smaller frames, so read the label before the chart.

What size Canada Goose should I get?
