Mackage vs Canada Goose: neither is warmer on paper

With the Expedition at CAD 1,995 in one tab and the Edward X at CAD 1,690 in the other, buy for everything else. Canada Goose's extra money buys a coat made in Canada, from a brand that dropped fur in 2022.

I'd buy the Mackage for a city winter, and the Canada Goose if made in Canada and no fur are the point.

For the coldest days, one scale against one number

Canada Goose's Thermal Experience Index runs from TEI 1, "The Lightest Level of Warmth", to TEI 5, "Extreme Warmth". The Expedition, nicknamed "Big Red", was built in the 1980s for scientists at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. The Mystique at CAD 1,795 shares its TEI 5.

Mackage prints one temperature per coat: minus 35°C on the Edward X, minus 30°C on the Trish X, both CAD 1,690. It publishes no warmth index and no test method, so read each number as the brand's own.

For a city winter, read the down and the care label

Mackage's Edward X, Trish X, Kay F and Adali SH pages print 800 fill power. The Edward X adds traceable duck down, 90% duck down and 10% feathers. Fill power is the room an ounce of down fills: higher is lighter for the same warmth.

At Due West, the Mackage Calina City says machine washable, and the Canada Goose Langford and Shelburne Black Label say dry clean only. For a mild winter I'd buy the Calina, rated to minus 15°C, at CAD 1,490 from the Mackage jackets and parkas.

For a coat with no fur, read the trim line

Canada Goose ended its fur purchases in 2021 and its fur manufacturing in 2022. Some earlier parkas still for sale list a removable fur ruff, so read the Canada Goose jackets and parkas closely.

Mackage lists fur on some coats: silver fox and rabbit on the Edward X, raccoon on the Kay F. NFR versions list none and cost less: the Edward NFR is CAD 1,490, rated to minus 25°C.

PETA's release of 20 July 2021 said APP Group, Mackage's parent, had confirmed a ban on fur across its brands. Those pages still list fur in October 2026, and Mackage publishes no fur policy page.

Who owns them, and where they are made

Sam Tick founded Metro Sportswear in 1957, and Dani Reiss has run Canada Goose since 2001. Its fiscal 2026 filing says over 80% of its down outerwear made in Canada came from its own factories. Bain Capital bought 70% in December 2013, and the filing says, "We are currently controlled by Bain Capital."

Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan founded Mackage in Montreal. In February 2017 its parent, APP Group, sold a controlling stake to Lee Equity Partners of New York. (Say it muh kaj, by the brand's own page.)

Mackage's site names no country, but retailers list single styles as made in China and Vietnam. Since January 2024 some jackets are made in Armenia too, and who owns Mackage and where it is made has the rest.

Warmth is a tie, so buy the coat for its fur, its factory or its price.

Canada Goose takes returns only unworn, with tags on. Mackage makes anything 40% off or more final sale.

At Due West, 431 Queen Street West, the men's Mackage Graydon is CAD 1,450 and rated to minus 25°C. The men's Canada Goose Langford Black Label there is TEI 4, made in Canada and CAD 1,545, marked down from CAD 1,875. Unless made in Canada is worth the difference, I'd take the Graydon.

The shop's chart puts Mackage men's coats in Italian sizes: "42 is about an XXS". For Canada Goose, read Canada Goose sizing first. A shop's own return policy applies, not the brand's.

Both were founded in Canada, in 1957 and 1999, and now answer to investors.
