How to spot fake Mackage: the receipt beats the logo

To spot fake Mackage, check the seller and the receipt first, because Mackage's lifetime warranty needs both and its list names 449 sellers.

To spot fake Mackage, start with the receipt: the lifetime warranty needs one from an authorized seller, and Mackage lists 449. I would read that receipt before the sleeve.

Mackage, on the shelf.

Mackage's own FAQ already asks the second hand buyer's question: "I want to submit a repair request but I no longer have a receipt. What do I do?" Its answer opens: "Claims without proof of purchase are not covered under the Mackage Warranty Program."

A real coat is real without a receipt, but only a listed seller's receipt buys Mackage's repairs. Without that paper, price it like a used coat with no promise behind it.

Quick facts

  • The warranty: manufacturing defects in materials or workmanship, "for the practical lifetime of the product", with repairs back in 2 to 8 weeks.
  • Mackage's seller list: 449 sellers in more than 30 countries, 124 of them in the United States.
  • Mackage's own markdowns: 126 of 394 products on its Canadian site, always by 25, 40, 50 or 60 percent.
  • The fraud sign: 80% off, the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre's example of a greatly reduced price.
  • On within: 87 Mackage pieces at two boutiques, CAD 250 to 2,390, median CAD 1,150, every price here read 15 October 2026.

For the shearling parka, read the care label

The McCord Stewart Museum's encyclopedia says Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan founded Mackage in Montreal in 1999, first making coats in leather, down and wool for women. Due West, a seller on Mackage's list at 431 Queen Street West in Toronto, says Elfassy was "inspired by his brothers' experience in the leather industry".

The Nicholas parka in black has sheepskin and lamb leather panels, a rating of minus 25°C and a price of CAD 2,390. The Robert and the Lilibeth carry shearling trim, and Mackage's own site lists 34 leather pieces, the Nixon shearling jacket at CAD 2,990 among them.

Read the care label, sewn into a side seam or just below the inner collar. Mackage's care guide sends coats with leather, shearling, fur or suede to a leather specialist, oil based solvent only, and the Nicholas's description says the same. A shearling parka whose label says otherwise is a question for the seller.

For the light down jacket, match the fill and the mark

Mackage says it "was founded in 1999 on the principle that materials matter", and 60% of its autumn and winter 2023 jackets were made from 100% recycled down. The Patsy-FZ, CAD 1,350, puts 90% goose down under an Agile 360 two way stretch shell, while the Farren-Z and the Jack-ZZ use duck down. The glossy Madalyn-Glo wraps 85% recycled down in a 100% polyurethane shell (and it goes in the washing machine, in water up to 40°C).

The Nicholas, Robert, Lilibeth and Jack-ZZ list an M logo patch on the left sleeve. On the Madalyn-Glo it is a "MACKAGE embossed patch", and the descriptions of the Farren-Z and Graydon-Z name no logo.

The Patsy-FZ's detachable fur trim sits outside the warranty unless a style is deemed defective, and shed fur in the hood counts as normal wear and tear. Women's styles are gathered under Mackage jackets and parkas for women.

For the deep winter parka, check the letters after the name

Mackage added men's coats in 2008, the museum says, and two of its Edwards are different coats. On its own site, Mackage calls the Edward-F "a Nordic Tech recycled down parka with a removable hooded bib". It carries a fur collar and a sleeve logo patch, is rated to minus 35°C and costs CAD 1,690.

The Edward-NFR, a two in one coat at CAD 1,490, keeps the hooded bib but lists no fur, and it is rated to minus 25°C. So is the Graydon-Z, CAD 1,450, with 800 traceable duck down and a removable bib in light weight down.

A listing should name the model with the letters after it, and I would not pay for one that does not. Mackage had no Edward marked down on 15 October 2026, so ask why a cheap one is cheap.

A Mackage markdown against a stranger's 80% off

A low price does not prove a fake. On Mackage's own Canadian site, the Robert sold at CAD 2,190 in black and CAD 876 in sky blue. The Mai wrap coat, double face wool made by hand with a waterfall collar, went for CAD 1,190 in black and CAD 595 in yellow.

The shop on Queen Street West has marked down 9 Mackage pieces, among them the Jay jacket in otter and natural, now CAD 995 from CAD 1,450. Its sale pieces cannot be refunded, so decide before you buy from Mackage marked down.

The Canadian Anti Fraud Centre describes the other kind of discount: greatly reduced prices, 80% off in its example, sold with "Today Only". Its first protection is knowing the market value, so check the same model on Mackage's own site, in the same currency.

Sixty percent off from Mackage is a sale. Eighty from a new account is a question.

Four checks before you pay

First, the seller: Mackage, its 19 stores, or a name on its list, such as Harrods on Brompton Road, Galeries Lafayette on Boulevard Haussmann or Lotte in Seoul.

Then the receipt: ask for the original invoice, and keep it with the coat.

Check the labels next, because all coverage is void once the labels inside are removed. A small P.O. tag is sewn into the inner seam near the fibre content label, but older models may not have one, so a missing tag proves nothing alone.

For the payment, the Anti Fraud Centre advises a method with fraud protection, such as a credit card. Verify the seller's address, phone number and email, and pick up and pay in person when you can.

Utopia, which is not on Mackage's list, sells pre owned Mackage and promises that "All products sold are 100% authentic", with photos that show each flaw. Every sale there is final, and you buy on the shop's word, outside Mackage's warranty unless the original receipt from a listed seller comes with it. A used coat at a fair price is still a good coat.

A scarf never had the warranty, since accessories are excluded, so for a Juno-Z or a Benson at CAD 200 the seller and the price are the whole check.

Mackage ships free and charges no customs fees or duty, and both shops ship abroad, though the shop on Queen Street West does not cover duties or taxes.

If you own a Canada Goose or a Moncler too, read how to spot fake Canada Goose and how to spot fake Moncler. For who owns Mackage, read is Mackage Canadian.

A good parka will have more than one owner, and the receipt is the part worth handing on with it.

Common questions

Where can I buy a mackage coat?

From Mackage's own site, its 19 stores or the 449 sellers on its list. Due West is on the list, and where to buy Mackage sets out the shops and prices.

Do Mackage coats go on sale?

Yes, and Mackage marks them down itself: 126 of 394 products on its Canadian site had a size or colour marked down by 25 to 60 percent. It also runs its own outlets, and one seller on its list has marked down 9 Mackage pieces that cannot be refunded.

How to tell if a mackage coat is real?

Ask where it was bought and for the original receipt, because Mackage's warranty covers only coats from its authorized sellers with proof of purchase. Then read the coat against the model's own description, and its price against Mackage's own in the same currency.
