Why is Bape so expensive? The price grows at every border

On 27 September 2026, someone on r/Sneakers was torn between a BAPE SK8 STA BOLD #1 and an Air Force 1 for their first saved up pair. That SK8 STA is USD 325 on Bape's US store, about CAD 462, and JPY 33,000 in Japan, about CAD 297. Pick the Bape, and the first decision is which country to buy it from.

The name and the scarcity carry a price, and Bape's US and UK stores mark down nothing. Grant all of that. Bape does not say why its prices change by country, so the useful question is where each is lowest.

Japan against the US, the UK and the EU

Of the 91 styles on all four of Bape's web stores, Japan is cheapest for 89. Against Japan, the median piece costs about 69 percent more in the US, about 46 percent more in the UK and about 36 percent more in the EU. By that median, Europe's store is the closest.

Japan's prices include its consumption tax, US prices are before sales tax, and UK and EU prices are as listed. So the Japanese number is the whole number. Other labels face the same question in is luxury cheaper abroad and why Supreme is so expensive.

For the tee, the College is cheapest at home

Bape began on 1 April 1993, when Nowhere Co., Ltd was set up in Harajuku, Tokyo and started A BATHING APE. The College tee is 100 percent cotton, and Bape's European page names Japan as the maker.

In Japan it is JPY 12,100, about CAD 109. Both the UK and EU stores print 85, in different money. Converted, that is about CAD 161 in pounds and about CAD 136 in euros.

Stateside, the tee is USD 129, about CAD 184, the highest of the four for the same cotton.

Marked down tees close most of that gap. At Outlined, the ABC Camo College tees in pink, green and blue each ask CAD 108, from CAD 180, on its Bape marked down shelf. That lands at about Bape's Japanese price, from about its US one.

Sale pieces there cannot be refunded, per the shop's own page. Wear the green one, on black, with jeans you already own; one print is plenty.

For the hood, the Shark is made in Japan

Bape's own copy dates the Shark hoodie in a single phrase: "Since its debut in 2004". For the 1ST CAMO Shark full zip hoodie, the European page lists 100 percent cotton and Japan as the maker.

Japan's price is JPY 50,600, about CAD 455. Every other store charges more: USD 475 in the US, about CAD 676; EUR 429 in the EU, about CAD 687; GBP 379 in the UK, about CAD 716. A hoodie made in Japan is cheapest in Japan, which surprises no one.

On the US page, the Paisley Pattern Shark full zip is "a full zip hoodie with brushed lining", regular fit. It runs USD 679 there, about CAD 966, against JPY 60,500 in Japan, about CAD 545. Louder print, wider gap.

Zip it halfway over a plain white tee and dark jeans, with nothing else loud.

For the feet, made in China and still cheapest in Japan

Bape's Japanese copy says it rebuilt the BAPE STA from a new angle, on a theme of early 2000s nostalgia. Its newest SK8 STA reworks early 2000s street culture, in Bape's words. Nostalgia, sold new.

Leather, this time, and a different factory: Bape's European page lists the BAPE STA #1 as 100 percent cow leather, made in China. It still costs least in Japan, at JPY 31,900, about CAD 287.

Over on the US store it is USD 325, about CAD 462. The EU store charges EUR 299, about CAD 479, and the UK store tops the four at GBP 279, about CAD 527. So the factory is not why the price grows abroad.

That SK8 STA BOLD #1 from r/Sneakers follows suit: USD 325 against JPY 33,000. Wear either with straight jeans that stop at the ankle, so the shoe shows.

Same shoe, same factory, four prices. Japan's is the lowest.

Before you pay

Buy in Japan, if a trip is coming. The Japanese site ships only inside Japan and points buyers abroad to int.bape.com. Bape's store list names 22 BAPE STOREs in Japan, from Aoyama and Harajuku to Fukuoka (and if you go, read how Tokyo dresses before you pack).

Keep the receipt: that site takes no returns, and its only exchange is for a defect Bape caused.

Or watch the European store. It had 52 of its 1,063 pieces marked down, against none of 959 in the US and none of 1,250 in the UK.

Or buy second hand. Run any pre owned piece past how to spot fake Bape, and read the returns page first, since some resale shops sell everything as final. A low price proves nothing either way.

Ask where before you ask why, and most streetwear prices start to make sense.
