How to tell if a Louis Vuitton bag is real (2026 guide)
A date code or chip does not prove a Louis Vuitton bag is real. Stamp, canvas, stitching and hardware checks to use together, plus pre owned LV prices.
Use five checks when buying a Louis Vuitton bag: heat stamp, canvas, stitching, hardware and the seller. A written guarantee is useful recourse, not proof of authenticity. A date code or a microchip proves nothing alone, because counterfeiters copy both, and Louis Vuitton swapped codes for chips in 2021.

That is the part most people get wrong. They find four digits inside a pocket, decode them, and relax. The code was never a certificate.
Quick facts
- Authenticity cards: 0; Louis Vuitton does not issue them, so a card in the box is no proof
- Date codes: 2 letters and 4 digits, phased out around March 2021
- Reading one: SD2119 is week 21 of 2019, made at the SD factory
- Since 2021: 1 RFID chip sewn inside replaced the date code, and no public app checks it
- The stamp: the O in Vuitton is round and the 2 Ts almost touch
- Pre owned LV on within: 16 bags and small leather goods, CAD 300 to 3,500, read 1 November 2026
Why a date code does not prove a Louis Vuitton is real
A date code is a production reference. It tells you where and when a bag says it was made, and many bags share the same code. Collector's Cage puts it plainly: "neither a date code nor a microchip is a certificate of authenticity."
For bags made from about 2007 to 2021, the code is two letters and four digits. The letters point to the factory.
The 1st and 3rd digits give the week, and the 2nd and 4th give the year. So SD2119 reads as week 21 of 2019.
Older codes used other formats, so treat a pre 2007 code with more care, not less. And a code that decodes cleanly can still sit inside a fake.
A date code tells you when a bag says it was made. It never tells you the bag is real.
What changed in 2021: the chip
Around March 2021, Louis Vuitton began sewing a small RFID chip into the lining or a seam instead of stamping a code. It is hidden from view, though you may feel a small, firm rectangle through the leather.

The chip is for Louis Vuitton's own inventory and after sales service. There is no public Louis Vuitton app that confirms a bag by scanning it, and Collector's Cage reports that counterfeiters now copy chips as well.
A bag made after the 2021 change can have no date code. On an older Speedy, a missing code is a question for the seller.
The heat stamp
The stamp inside reads "Louis Vuitton Paris" with "made in" and the country: France, Spain, Italy, the USA or Switzerland, depending on the workshop. It should be crisp, evenly spaced and centred.
Look at the letters. The O in Vuitton is a true circle, not an oval, and the two Ts sit so close they almost touch.
Lux Second Chance adds that the L has a longer upright stroke than its foot.
The canvas and the pattern
Real coated canvas is thick, textured and matte. It should never feel slick, shiny or plasticky. On Monogram, the interlocking LV sits with the V slightly above the L, beside the four petal flowers.
Watch where the pattern meets a seam. Louis Vuitton aligns it with care, and a print that is chopped off or crooked at a seam is a classic tell. A classic Speedy is made from one piece, so the monogram on one side is upside down, and there is no seam across its base.
Some Damier Ebene models use a red lining. Match the lining to the exact model, year and edition rather than applying one colour rule to every bag.
Stitching, leather and hardware
On brown canvas, the stitching is mustard yellow, not bright yellow. Stitches should be even in length and spacing, with no loose threads.
Vachetta, the natural cowhide on handles and trim, starts pale and darkens to honey with use. Pale handles on an older bag can also reflect replacement or limited use, so ask the seller about repairs.
Compare hardware material, finish and engraving with the exact model and year. Zips should run smoothly; flaking finish or poor engraving deserves a closer check. Do not assume that every Louis Vuitton fitting uses the same metal.
The dust bag and packaging
Packaging can give a fake away too. Lux Second Chance says a real bag never has a price tag or brand tag hanging from its handles, and its handles never come wrapped in plastic.
The dust bag should say only LOUIS VUITTON or carry the monogram, with nothing else printed on it. Fake makers give themselves away by printing too much, per the same guide.
The seller check, which matters most
Louis Vuitton sells new bags only through its own stores and site. A "new" bag at a discount anywhere else is the first red flag. Anything sold outside Louis Vuitton is resale, not retail, so the price should match the condition.
Ask the seller for the code or confirmation of a chip, clear photos of the stamp, lining and hardware, and an authenticity guarantee in writing. If they cannot give all four, walk away.
What pre owned Louis Vuitton costs now
On 1 November 2026, Utopia had 71 Louis Vuitton pieces on the Louis Vuitton shelf. Sixteen were bags, wallets, pouches and charms, from CAD 300 to 3,500. Every one was final sale, and each listing carried the line "Every item sold by Utopia is guaranteed 100% authentic."

The Keepall 55 in yellow Epi leather asked CAD 900, pre owned. The Keepall Bandouliere 55 in Damier Graphite asked CAD 3,000.
For something smaller, the Avenue Slingbag PM asked CAD 1,500 and the Nano Steamer in black Taurillon CAD 1,800.
The Murakami Sarah wallet in white asked CAD 400, and the Nigo Brazza wallet in Damier Ebene Giant CAD 1,000. The top of the shelf was the Horizon 55 carry on in Monogram Eclipse at CAD 3,500.
Why the new prices sit so far above these is in why Louis Vuitton is so expensive.
How to tell if a Louis Vuitton bag is real, in short
To tell if a Louis Vuitton bag is real, check that everything agrees. Look for a crisp heat stamp with a round O and near touching Ts, and thick matte canvas with the pattern aligned at the seams. Then check for even mustard stitching on brown canvas, hardware that matches the model, and Vachetta that darkens with age.
Louis Vuitton issues no authenticity cards and sells new bags only through its own stores. Buy pre owned from a seller who guarantees authenticity in writing.
Common questions
How do I check a Louis Vuitton serial number?
Louis Vuitton bags do not carry serial numbers. Older bags have a date code, which many bags share, and bags made since about March 2021 carry a chip instead. Neither confirms a bag is real.
Do Louis Vuitton bags come with authenticity cards?
No. Louis Vuitton does not issue authenticity cards, so a card in the box proves nothing.
What does the inside of a real Louis Vuitton look like?
Clean, even stitching and a lining in the right colour for the model, checked against the exact model and year. The heat stamp is crisp and centred, and reads "Louis Vuitton Paris" and "made in" with the country.
Can I scan a Louis Vuitton chip with my phone?
A phone can sometimes detect that a chip is there, but there is no public Louis Vuitton app that confirms the bag. Treat any scan "certificate" as a red flag.
Where else can I learn to legit check designer pieces?
