Designer resale in Canada: where to buy, and the bag rule

For the one who wants to hold it first

This is the route if you want to see the stitching before you pay. At Turnabout, a buyer turns each piece over for stamping, stitching, date codes and holograms before it goes out, and an outside authenticator can add a certificate for a fee.

Mauro's business now runs 9 locations across Vancouver and BC. Every sale there is final, in store and online. That certificate is the only certainty you can buy.

VSP Consignment began as Vespucci, which Dianne Rawlinson opened in Calgary in 1986, and Britt Rawlinson started the Toronto shop at 1410 Dundas Street West in 2013. Every piece is authenticated before it goes on sale, and eligible bags can go through Entrupy's technology, with a certificate at $200 for Hermès and $45 for small goods. Online buys can come back within 7 days, though never a handbag.

Mine & Yours has sold resale since 2013, and its owner, Courtney Watkins, heads her note on the shop's site "Resale is the Future of Fashion". Its shops are in Yaletown, Kitsilano and on Yorkville Avenue, and its own specialists, an outside partner or both authenticate what comes in. Full price clothes and shoes bought online can go back within 15 days for store credit, but bags stay sold.

For the one shopping across the border

The RealReal, incorporated in 2011 and run from San Francisco, ships to over 60 countries. To Canada it charges US$45 for 3 to 6 business days. The duties and GST are yours on top.

Its own page counts 100+ specialists who physically examine every item, and its terms say the brands take no part in that check. A return request runs 14 days from the shipment date, not the delivery, and a bag is final sale unless you buy its Return Guarantee.

For sneakers and Chrome Hearts

Utopia, at 132 Cumberland Street in Yorkville, sells pre owned Jordans and Chrome Hearts by the hundred, each piece graded by the shop and photographed to show its flaws. It states that all it sells is 100% authentic, takes no returns, and ships abroad in 7 to 10 business days.

How a resale price gets set

Scarcity moves a resale price more than wear does. The RealReal weighs demand and scarcity first, down to "which collabs sold out in ten seconds", and puts condition third, with newer fetching more "in most cases".

The resale index shows the same thing on two boutique shelves. A pre owned Jordan 1 asks a middle $300 against $350 for all 241 listings, while pre owned Travis Scott sneakers ask $1,000 against $450 for all 132. Something other than wear is setting that second price.

On a final sale bag, the authenticity promise is the return policy.

What to check before you pay

Get the authenticity promise in writing, and note whose promise it is. Turnabout and Mine & Yours both say in print that they are not authorized sellers of the brands, and The RealReal's terms keep the brands out of its checks.

Read the final sale list for your category first, then the price, and add duty and GST to anything priced in US dollars. Ask for photos of every flaw and hold the grade against them. (A missing grade is not a promise of new: of the 4,629 pieces on those two boutique shelves, 3,249 state no condition at all.)

Consignment is one way to resell: the shop sells your piece on your behalf and pays you once it sells. Resale is the wider word for any second sale, consigned or bought outright. The word consignment has meant goods handed over for sale since about 1700.

How to authenticate designer clothes?

Check the label, stitching, hardware and any date code or serial number against a piece you know is real, then ask the seller for a certificate. Turnabout's buyers check exactly those marks, and VSP sells an Entrupy certificate at $45 to $200 by item.
