Luxury streetwear is the hoodie, tee, jeans and sneaker of skate and hip hop dress, made by designer labels or by streetwear labels at a luxury price. The shapes stay loose and plain, and the money goes into heavy cotton, distressed denim, leather sneakers and sterling silver.
It grew from the skate shops of nineties New York and the Harajuku labels of Tokyo, and reached Paris runways when Virgil Abloh took over Louis Vuitton menswear. Chrome Hearts, founded in Los Angeles in the late eighties, prints crosses and gothic letters on heavy fleece, and Amiri, also from Los Angeles, made its name with distressed jeans. Balenciaga cuts its hoodies very large, and Rick Owens brings his Geobasket and Ramones sneakers and his DRKSHDW tees.
Wear one loud piece, a logo hoodie or a chunky sneaker, with plain jeans or cargo pants and a plain tee. Utopia in Toronto carries most of it, from Chrome Hearts and Supreme to Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton trainers, some pre owned. Due West adds Y-3 and Adidas x Wales Bonner, Outlined adds Bape, and parlor23 adds Jordan sneakers.
