About Pleats Please Issey Miyake
Pleats Please Issey Miyake became a line of its own with the spring and summer 1994 collection. It grew out of pleats that the Japanese designer Issey Miyake first showed in 1988. Miyake founded his design studio in Tokyo in 1970 and died in 2022. Each piece is cut two and a half to three times its final size and sewn together first. The oversized garment then goes between two sheets of paper and through a heat press, which sets the pleats. The fabric is a very fine polyester, and the pleats hold through the wash. Miyake described the clothes as resistant to static and stains, and quick to dry. The line is made of basic pieces that mix with one another and need little care.
