About Balenciaga

Cristóbal Balenciaga opened his first workshop in San Sebastián, Spain, in 1917. He was born in Getaria, Spain, in 1895. The Spanish Civil War closed his shops, and in August 1937 he opened in Paris on Avenue George V. Several of his shapes stood away from the body instead of following it. He made the balloon jacket in 1953, then the sack dress, the cocoon coat and the baby doll dress in 1957. Christian Dior called him "the master of us all." He retired in 1968. Demna led the label from 2015 to 2025. Pierpaolo Piccioli, who spent 25 years at Valentino, became creative director in July 2025. His first collection, shown in Paris in October 2025, revisited the 1957 sack dress.
