About Goyard

Goyard dates to 1853 in Paris, when François Goyard took over the trunk business where he had trained as an apprentice. Its roots go back to Maison Martin, a box and trunk maker founded in 1792. In 1892 his son Edmond created Goyardine, a coated canvas whose dotted pattern forms three chevrons in the shape of a Y. The Y is the central letter of the family name. The canvas is linen and cotton, and its pattern is screen printed in three layers of colour. Artisans can hand paint initials and stripes onto it. The Saint Louis tote is a light, unstructured Goyardine bag that can be turned inside out. Jean-Michel Signoles bought Goyard from the family in 1998.
