Nike in Toronto.
Nike began on 25 January 1964, when Phil Knight and his University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman founded Blue Ribbon Sports. It first sold Japanese running shoes made by Onitsuka Tiger. The Nike name arrived in 1971. Jeff Johnson, its first full time employee, suggested the name, after the Greek goddess of victory. Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student, drew the Swoosh, first used in June 1971. Bowerman tested rubber in his wife's waffle iron to make a new sole, which led to the Waffle Trainer in 1974. Air Max followed in 1987. In October 2025 Nike renamed its Beaverton, Oregon headquarters the Philip H. Knight Campus.
