About Stussy

Stussy began in 1980, when Shawn Stussy was shaping surfboards in a studio in Laguna Canyon, California. At night he boxed tees for surf shops nearby. He wrote his surname on the boards with a broad marker. That signature, based on his uncle Jan Stussy's, became the logo. He put it on tees and caps and sold them from his car around Laguna Beach. He went into business with Frank Sinatra Jr., an accountant he surfed with and no relation to the singer. The surf crowd wore it first, then skaters and the hip hop scene took it up. Shawn Stussy stepped down as president in 1996 and sold his share that year.
