About Bape
Bape, short for A Bathing Ape, began in Harajuku, Tokyo, in 1993. Its founder is Nigo, born Tomoaki Nagao, who launched it with the designer Sk8thing. The name comes from a Japanese phrase about an ape bathing in lukewarm water, a joke about young people living too comfortably. The ape head logo comes from Nigo's love of the 1968 film Planet of the Apes. The label is known for its camo, the Baby Milo character and the shark hoodie, first sold in 2004. Its Bape Sta sneaker is modelled closely on the Nike Air Force 1. In 2011 the Hong Kong group I.T bought most of the company. Nigo stayed on for two years after the sale and left in 2013.
