About Canada Goose
The Canada Goose coat to know is the Expedition, called Big Red, and the company itself says it runs large. Size down. It was made in the 1980s for scientists at McMurdo Station in Antarctica.
Today's Expedition holds 80% duck down and 20% feathers, rated TEI 5 for minus 22 F and colder. It comes in 2XS to 3XL, and the charts are on the Canada Goose size page.
The company began in 1957 as Metro Sportswear, in a small Toronto warehouse where Sam Tick made wool vests, raincoats and snowmobile suits. His son in law, David Reiss, joined in the 1970s, built a machine that filled jackets with down and started the Snow Goose label that became Canada Goose. In 1982 Laurie Skreslet became the first Canadian to reach the top of Everest, in a parka from the same company.
Canada Goose runs seven factories of its own: three around Toronto, three in Winnipeg and one in Quebec. Every insulated coat is covered against faults in materials and making for the life of the coat.
It stopped buying fur in 2021 and made its last coats with fur in 2022, so a real fur trim means an older coat. Since 2023 its own Generations shop sells used Canada Goose and takes old coats in trade for a gift card.
In Toronto, Due West at 431 Queen St W carries Canada Goose, and Utopia at 132 Cumberland Street has a few pieces too. On 13 October 2026 they ran from about $49 for gloves to about $1,270 for a coat, with sweaters, vests and hats in between.
