Massimo Osti founded Stone Island in Italy in 1982. The name comes from the novels of Joseph Conrad. The label started with a fabric. Osti took a stiff fabric made for truck tarpaulins, a different colour on each side, and stone washed it until it looked worn. The fabric was named Tela Stella, and the first collection was seven jackets. He also dyed clothes after they were sewn, not before, which gave each one its own tone. Heat sensitive fabric followed in 1987, and reflective fabric in 1991. The compass badge buttons onto the left side of the garment. It drew on military insignia, and the compass stood for a love of the sea. Stone Island has been part of the Moncler Group since 2021.
