Nike in Toronto.
The Nike you find in Toronto goes back to a track coach and his runner, who first sold a Japanese maker's shoes. Bill Bowerman coached at the University of Oregon, Phil Knight ran for him, and their Blue Ribbon Sports sold Onitsuka's Tiger shoes. The turn came when Carolyn Davidson, a design student, drew the Swoosh, and a football boot called the Nike wore it first. Bowerman kept making shoes for runners, from the Cortez for the roads to the Waffle Trainer. This shelf gathers the Nike held by Toronto's independent boutiques.

About Nike
Nike began in 1964 selling another company's shoes. That year Bill Bowerman, the University of Oregon track coach, and Phil Knight, one of his runners, founded Blue Ribbon Sports. It sold the Tiger shoes of Onitsuka, a Japanese maker, which also made a Bowerman design as the Tiger Cortez.
Carolyn Davidson, a design student at Portland State, drew the Swoosh and sent Knight an invoice for $35. The first shoe to carry it was a football boot called the Nike, sold in 1971 for $16.95. Bowerman's waffle sole ran at the 1972 US Olympic track trials in Eugene, and he turned it into the Waffle Trainer in 1974.
In 1987 Tinker Hatfield's Air Max 1 let you see the Air bag from the outside, an idea he took from the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
In Toronto, Nike sits at Utopia on Cumberland Street and at parlor23 on Willison Square, from $50 on 13 October 2026. For a first pair, the Air Force 1 is the safe pick: Bruce Kilgore's basketball shoe of 1982 had crossed into everyday wear by 1985. Measure your longer foot and size up between sizes, as Nike says.
For sizing, Nike's chart gives US, UK, EU and CM/JP sizes, with US men's from 3.5 to 22 in half sizes. The charts are on the Nike size page.
On 13 October 2026 the sneakers at Utopia and parlor23 in Toronto ran from $100 to $3,000, and half of the shelf cost $300 or less. Some pieces were pre owned, so read each one's wear grade before you pay.
