Nike is a runner's label first, begun by an Oregon track coach, Bill Bowerman, and Phil Knight, who ran for him. Their first company, Blue Ribbon Sports, sold Tiger shoes from the Japanese maker Onitsuka, among them a Cortez that Bowerman designed for the roads. Carolyn Davidson, who studied design at Portland State, drew the Swoosh, and it went first on a football boot sold as the Nike. The Swoosh gave the label its mark, but the track gave it the shoes. Bowerman's waffle sole raced at the Olympic trials in Eugene before it became the Waffle Trainer. Below is the Nike that independent boutiques hold.

About Nike
Nike began in 1964 selling another company's shoes. That year Bill Bowerman, the University of Oregon track coach, and Phil Knight, one of his runners, founded Blue Ribbon Sports. It sold the Tiger shoes of Onitsuka, a Japanese maker, which also made a Bowerman design as the Tiger Cortez.
Carolyn Davidson, a design student at Portland State, drew the Swoosh and sent Knight an invoice for NOK 231. The first shoe to carry it was a football boot called the Nike, sold in 1971 for NOK 112. Bowerman's waffle sole ran at the 1972 US Olympic track trials in Eugene, and he turned it into the Waffle Trainer in 1974.
In 1987 Tinker Hatfield's Air Max 1 let you see the Air bag from the outside, an idea he took from the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
For a first pair, the Air Force 1 is the safe pick: Bruce Kilgore's basketball shoe of 1982 had crossed into everyday wear by 1985. Measure your longer foot and size up between sizes, as Nike says.
