About Converse
Marquis Mills Converse founded Converse in Malden, Massachusetts, in February 1908. It began as a rubber shoe maker, with winter rubber shoes, galoshes and tennis shoes. In 1917 it designed the forerunner of the All Star, a basketball shoe with a canvas upper and a rubber sole. Chuck Taylor, a basketball player, joined as a salesman in 1921. His signature went onto the ankle patch, and the shoe became the Chuck Taylor All Star. Nike bought Converse in 2003. In February 2025 Converse introduced the SHAI 001, the first signature shoe of Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. It has a unibody molded design, a forefoot Zoom Air unit and a locking zipper. In June 2026 Gilgeous-Alexander left Converse for Nike Basketball.
