The Tokyo born designer has made it with adidas since 2002. He said the clothes he was designing did not work on the street, so he phoned Nike, which turned him down, and then adidas, which said yes.
The two first showed at Paris Fashion Week in October 2002, and the first Y-3 collection was for spring and summer 2003. Yamamoto kept the palette to black, navy and white, with the three white stripes on black. For many years orange was the main colour of the logo.
The Qasa High of 2013 had a neoprene sock upper, stretch mesh, a leather toe cap and an EVA sole taken from adidas Tubular running shoes of the 1990s. Y-3 opened its first shop of its own in New York's West Village in 2008. The size charts for the clothes are on the Y-3 size page.
On 13 October 2026 its shirts ran from AED 197 to AED 787, its hoodies from AED 550 to AED 1,302 and its jackets and coats from AED 550 to AED 2,355. Shorts ran from AED 787 to AED 868, half of the shelf cost AED 697 or less, and some pieces were marked down.
