About Bape

A Bathing Ape started in Harajuku, Tokyo, in 1993. Nigo, born Tomoaki Nagao, opened the shop Nowhere there that year with the designer Jun Takahashi, and the company Nowhere Co., Ltd was set up on 1 April 1993.
The name comes from a Japanese saying about a bathing ape in lukewarm water, someone who overindulges. Its ape logo comes from Nigo's love of the 1968 film Planet of the Apes.
BAPE's own page lists its camo, the Baby Milo character, the Shark hoodie and the Bape Sta sneaker as the designs it is known for. The Shark hoodie first came out in 2004, and the first shops outside Japan opened in New York and Los Angeles in 2005 and 2006. Nigo started Human Made with Pharrell Williams in 2010, and in early 2011 he sold A Bathing Ape to the Hong Kong retailer I.T, which owns it today.
On 13 October 2026 its shirts ran from R$327 to R$779 and its hoodies and sweaters from R$779 to R$2,919, with sneakers at R$1,557 to R$2,336. Half of the shelf cost R$420 or less, and some pieces were pre owned, each with the shop's wear grade.
