About Goyard
Goyard calls itself a Paris trunk maker since 1853. Its roots go back to Maison Martin, a box and case maker that Pierre François Martin started in 1792. François Goyard joined as a 17 year old apprentice in 1845 and took over when the owner, Louis Henri Morel, died in 1852.
His son Edmond became head of the business on 1 April 1885, and in 1892 he made the Goyardine canvas. He was the first Paris trunk maker to sign his canvas with his name. Its dots form three chevrons in the shape of a Y, the middle letter of the family name.
Goyardine starts as a coated cloth of linen and cotton, given a ground colour and then three layers of colour by screen printing. Initials and stripes are painted on by hand by the label's own painters, with colours made from natural pigments. The shop has stood at 233 rue Saint Honoré since the street was renumbered in 1856.

Jean Michel Signoles, who bought Goyard in 1998, first found a Goyard trunk in a Paris antique shop in 1974.
