Jordan began as one shoe. Peter Moore designed the first Air Jordan, and the Air Jordan 1 went on sale in April 1985 in black and red. For training camp in September 1984, Nike's team had recoloured existing tooling in black, red and white and added the Wings logo.
The pair broke an NBA rule. A shoe had to be at least 51% white and match the team's colours, and the black and red pair did neither. Nike's Banned ad said the league had thrown the shoes out of the game but could not stop you from wearing them.
The Air Jordan 3 of 1988 was Tinker Hatfield's first Jordan design, and he made the elephant print for it. Jordan wore it to win his third Slam Dunk contest, and Nike dates the Jumpman logo to that win. On 10 September 1997 Nike and Michael Jordan announced a Jordan brand of shoes and sportswear, when the newest Air Jordan was the 13th model.
