About Balenciaga

Cristóbal Balenciaga was born in 1895 in Getaria, a fishing village in the Basque Country of northern Spain. He set up on his own in San Sebastián in 1917, when he was 22, and later opened in Barcelona and Madrid too. During the Civil War he left Spain, and in 1937 he opened Balenciaga at 10 Avenue George V in Paris.
His favourite fabric was silk gazar, stiff but light, the V&A says. In the early 1950s his dresses had balloon hems, and the baby doll dress followed in the late 1950s. He brought out the sack dress in 1957, a straight shift with no waist that led to the mini dress of the 1960s.
The business closed in 1968, he died four years later, and the label came back in 1986 under a run of creative directors. First called the Motorcycle, the City came back as the Le Cagole in 2021.
The Triple S sneaker stacks sole moulds from running, basketball and track shoes, and it went on sale on 21 September 2017 at 795 US dollars. Demna left in 2025 after 10 years as creative director, and Pierpaolo Piccioli, at Valentino from 1999 to 2024, took over on 10 July 2025. The clothing charts are on the Balenciaga size page.
