Shawn Stussy started shaping his own surfboards in his family's garage at 13. From 1973 to 1980 he shaped boards for Russell Surfboards on 17th Street in Huntington Beach, and at night he boxed T-shirts for surf shops in the area.
The San Francisco Chronicle tells the start this way: in 1980 in Laguna Beach, Stussy sold homemade T-shirts, caps and his surfboards from the trunk of his car. Stussy Inc. was set up in 1984, and Frank Sinatra Jr., an accountant who surfed with him and no relation to the singer, became his partner in 1985.
Sinatra owned half of the company, the Los Angeles Times reported in 1996. In January 1996 Shawn Stussy, then 41, stepped down as president of the company, based in Irvine, which had MX$472 million a year in sales.
