Marquis Mills Converse founded Converse in Malden, Massachusetts, in February 1908. It began as a rubber shoe maker, with winter rubber shoes, galoshes and tennis shoes. In 1917 it designed the forerunner of the All Star, a basketball shoe with a canvas upper and a rubber sole. Chuck Taylor, a basketball player, joined as a salesman in 1921. In February 2025 Converse introduced the SHAI 001, the first signature shoe of Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. It has a unibody molded design, a forefoot Zoom Air unit and a locking zipper. In June 2026 Gilgeous-Alexander left Converse for Nike Basketball.
