KAWS is the name Brian Donnelly, born in Jersey City in 1974, has used since his teens. He took a degree in illustration at the School of Visual Arts in 1996, then painted cartoon backgrounds for the studio Jumbo Pictures. At night he painted over ads in bus shelters and phone booths. His character Companion dates from 1999, a grey figure based on Mickey Mouse with crossed out eyes. From 2006 to 2013 he ran OriginalFake, a label and shop in Tokyo, with Medicom Toy. In 2012 Companion flew as a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. He began making T shirts with Uniqlo in 2016. In September 2025 Uniqlo named him its first Artist in Residence.
