Mitchell & Ness was founded in Philadelphia in 1904 by Frank P. Mitchell and Charles M. Ness. The first shop, on Arch Street, made and strung tennis rackets by hand and built golf clubs to order. It went on to make uniforms for local teams, and it dressed the Philadelphia Eagles from 1933. In the 1980s a customer asked it to repair a 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates vest and a 1949 St. Louis Browns jersey, both wool flannel. That request led it to recreate historic jerseys, and the first batch sold out almost overnight. Its Hardwood Classics basketball jerseys followed in 1999. By 2007 it was also making caps for the NBA, NFL, NHL and NCAA. Fanatics and a group of investors bought the company in 2022, and Fanatics still owns it.
