Takashi Murakami, born in Tokyo in 1962, is an artist trained in traditional Japanese painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1996 he founded the Hiropon Factory studio, which grew into the art production company Kaikai Kiki. His Superflat theory, published in 2000, links the flat images of older Japanese art to anime and manga. Smiling flowers and his character Mr. DOB appear across his paintings, sculpture and merchandise. In 2002 Marc Jacobs invited him to work with Louis Vuitton, which used his art on a series of handbags. In 2020 Perrier announced bottles printed with his smiling flowers, with cans to follow. In 2025 Gagosian in New York showed his paintings that respond to Hiroshige's 100 Famous Views of Edo.
