Adi Dassler and his brother registered a shoe factory, the Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik, in 1924. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics Jesse Owens won four gold medals in Dassler's spiked running shoes. On 18 August 1949, aged 49, Adi registered his own company in Herzogenaurach, Germany, with 47 employees, and the name and the three stripes were registered with it.
The Samba came out in 1950 as a football boot for icy and snowy pitches, weighing 357 grams. Its look of today arrived in 1972, the year the Trefoil logo came in.
The Superstar launched in 1970 as a low top basketball shoe with an all leather upper and a rubber shell toe. In the mid 1980s Run DMC took the laces out of theirs and wrote a song about them. That moved the shoe from the court to the street.
The Stan Smith began in the mid 1960s as a tennis shoe made with the French player Robert Haillet. Pairs with Stan Smith's name came out in 1973, and Haillet's name left the shoe in 1978.
Adi Dassler died on 6 September 1978, shortly before his 78th birthday.
